By which I mean, at this point in the narrative, anything Walt does to protect his family is just him cleaning up a mess that he started in the first place.

People aren't EVILLY HATING ON WALT, honest to god. This is WHO HIS CHARACTER IS. The whole Mr Chips to Scarface thing has been drummed into us so many times that it's almost a cliche, but people still seem to take offence when you point out that, right now, Walt is the villain. He's a compelling character, he's well written, he's brilliantly played. And he's a fucking scumbag who makes me furious almost all the time he's onscreen. It's not like people dislike Walt for crazy reasons that they're pulling out of thin air. People dislike Walt because of who he is and the bad things he's done.

Not that Walt's whole protect the family schtick isn't arguably still a motivator for him, but at this point he's changed so much as a human being that his whole attitude towards the family that he wants to protect is warped. He's basically holding Skyler hostage and he's EATING JUNIOR'S BREAKFAST. What next? Is he going to steal baby Holly's lovely pink romper? I WOULDN'T PUT IT PAST HIM.

Uh, what friends? If you're talking about the "disappear" thing, that was for Skyler and the kids only, it's pretty clear.

Also, do you mean the same character who was repeatedly given chances to quit the business, including unlimited free money at the very beginning of the series, and still returned multiple times for the sake of his own ego?

I'm pretty sure he also wanted to get Hank and Marie out as well because Gus was aiming for Hank.

No, he called a tip for Hank. Hank was never going to be part of the "escape" deal.

Also, again, Hank would never be involved in shit if Walt hadn't directly gotten him back into the game with all his OH I DON'T THINK GALE WAS HEISENBERG bullshit. Let's be real here: Walt may care for his family, but his primary motivation at this point is 100% ego.

He was high on his own hubris and bitterness that Gale was getting credit for his meth recipe.

But yes, he'd also had some wine. I guess endangering your entire family is acceptable under the circumstances.

So? That doesn't absolve him. He knowingly got drunk (purposefully in that scene), despite the fact that he's dangerously let things slip before while drunk/drugged, and then essentially bragged about his accomplishments to Hank's face. He is a prideful, prideful man, and his pride is what put Hank back in danger in the first place.

Gus is a ridiculously interesting character, lbr.

I think it's fine to like Walt as long as you aren't pushing this delusional "HE'S JUST DOING IT FOR THE FAMILY, SKYLER IS AN UNGRATEFUL NAG, etc.," which so many Walt stans still believe. That they still think Walt has good intentions is what irritates me, and I believe the same goes for yeahscience.

(I honestly do not understand people who act like it's crazy that people don't like Walt anymore. If (general) you still like and sympathize with him, fine, but it is damn clear that is not what the show is aiming for right now.)

Yeah. After Brock and then EVERY SINGLE SCENE this season, I don't see how people don't get that we're SUPPOSED to dislike him.

I'm pretty sure when it gets to the point where you are blackmailing your wife into staying in a miserable situation, you can no longer claim to be doing it for your damned family!

I'm counting down until someone tries to use Skyler's "protecting this family from the person who protects this family" line against her to justify that scene.

Sure, Walt wants to protect his family, but it's absolutely not the main thing that drives him at all, and you're either incredibly naive or don't understand the show in the slightest if you think otherwise.

At first, yeah, he wanted Skyler and the kids to be financially secure. But now it's all about him and his fucking empire.
