I haven't been in comic book fandom for long either but as far as I know Marvel was almost bankrupt when Quesada took over and now it's very much profitable again so yeah, he did bring sales back up.

Then what he's doing is working. I don't know how to feel about that. Either comic fans who are upset are in the minority or they aren't putting their money where their mouth is. Which means they're actively supporting something they don't like. But it can't be that simple. @_@ Okay, head spinning now.

Thanks for letting me know. <3

I think it's partly online fandom not representing general comic book buyers and partly people exaggerating Quesadas terribleness. He did a lot of things right, otherwise Marvel wouldn't have bounced back the way it did. It's just that the majority of fans are still very angry about One More Day, which is what mostly fuels all the hatred for him.

Hmmm, that makes sense. So it seems that he won't learn from part of fandom getting mad at him though. Because why should he?

You're so helpful. Thank you for taking your time with me.

Maybe Cool Story Bro:
This conversation actually reminds me about how I feel about Marvel and DC in general. I wish I could get into comics but Quesadas himself is a great example of why I can't. Not because of any poor decisions but because there never seems to be any consistency. New writers, artists, producers, etc. mean I can never settle down with the medium or story like I could with the (relative) safety of books or TV. It's frustrating because I know, in general, I would like those comics and the stories they have to tell.

Heh, no problem, always happy to share my limited knowledge with others :)

I don't think that's necessary true. I mean a lot of books keep the same writer for years thus keeping the story relatively consistent (e.g. Ed Brubaker on Captain America or Peter David on X-Factor). And there's always miniseries and short runs that are fairly self-contained.
I think part what Marvel is doing with Marvel NOW! is fixing this problem by deciding on a creative team and then sticking with them for a while so that they'll get really nice, thought-out, consistent story-arcs.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-08-18 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
While that's great I feel the creative team eventually will change and instead of trying to stay true to whatever was going on before it always seems like it's a clean slate afterwards. I know this isn't always the case, it's just a fear I have because it’s happened.

And it's weird for me. American comics seem to be the only medium that I can't fully get into.

Sorry I seem really negative. I just wish I fully understood why I can't get into something I know I could enjoy.

I consider myself a comic book fan, but I wouldn't read current comics from issue-to-issue as they come out if you paid me to. I don't trust either Marvel or DC an inch to not fuck up everything I put my emotional investment into for the sake of a crisis crossover or a bit of cheap drama, and the anger and dismay I get from wasted emotional investment far outweighs any suspense that comes from reading it currently. I only read back issues, and you know what? I'm totally satisfied with them.

There's decades worth of awesomeness there, and an unbelievable volume of glorious characters, great stories, endlessly complex continuity that draws you in by functioning almost exactly like (and even more addictively than) Tv Tropes β€” leading you on and on and on via references to discover goldmines in the form of storylines and characters you'd never have thought to look at before, all in two brilliantly interwoven shared universes, all of which is far enough in the past that you can tell the good from the bad and get an assist on what storylines are important and why with a quick internet search.

Why bother with current crap? Read it in a couple years when the storylines have been told and their places in the universes have been established.

You make a good point. Thank you for sharing your view with me.

Just, how does one buy old comics? I was under the impression that the comic book stores in my area only sold new stuff and rare/exclusive stuff. And how much money should I be expecting to spend on this?

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-08-18 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I buy a lot of trades, in which format most comic books stores should sell even really old comics, and order stuff online a lot. And a library near my university has a lot that I can borrow, so I'm guessing some other bigger libraries have comics too. The price varies a lot, so I dunno. Depends on what you're getting, I guess. Beware of the aforementioned TVTropes effect when it comes to the money, btw.

And, uh, sometimes I illegally download it, but I try to only do that when I'm just testing the waters and have no idea if I'll actually like something. Not because of morals, because I honestly would be ecstatic if Marvel never got another cent out of me, but it's pretty irritating and unsatisfying to try to read downloaded comic scans on your computer, compared to a physical issue or book. Much more so than watching a movie or reading plain text on the computer.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-08-18 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I see. It's a lot to consider. It's also a bit intimidating. But thank you for telling me. I really appreciate it. :)

I think I'll start poking my nose around to see what comics I would like.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's not true.

Since One More Day, the event in question, Amazing Spider-Man's sales have gone down significantly. Marvel's getting desperate with each arc being a big "event" and having ten thousand variant covers per issue.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-08-18 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Can't both be true? Spider-Man sales are going down but overall Marvel comics are doing better?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
To add to the comments, Quesada did a lot in terms of giving other titles that many people didn't believe would work the opportunity and chance to grow. Some of the most critically acclaimed stuff Marvel had under his supervision were ones he actively fought to keep like Runaways and the Marvel Galaxy titles but never demanded tight fisted creative control over them. He let the stronger writers flourish in a way that DC editorial never would allow.

The problem with One More Day is that he had a major, major axe to grind in terms of how he personally saw Spider-Man. He wanted Peter single/never married and he wanted it in whatever way he could, going so far as to even draw panels for the One More Day issues, he was that invested in it. That determination to make Spider-Man the way he remembered him eclipsed everything to the point where the current Spider-Man writer wanted his name taken off the run due to Quesada's editorial meddling.

So essentially Quesada can be a dick in getting his way, but he mostly knew how to run the business. Even if it is a wildly reviled decision by lots of writers, critics and fans, the rest of what he's doing is working. That means fans basically have to suck it up and buy the titles they like and hope one day someone will find the means to retcon this retcon.

So it's like I said to the other anon, Spider-Man sales are going down but overall Marvel is doing better.

But it makes sense. He can see and sense talent but has none himself or is a bit too obsessive in some areas. And yeah, I heard about that name drop thing. I watch Linkara sometimes and he mentioned it.

But if the Spider-Man comics are doing poorly then it would teach him a lesson about such huge levels of meddling hopefully.

So it's like I said to the other anon, Spider-Man sales are going down but overall Marvel is doing better.

yes. the ultimate line, for instance, was created under his tenure and it was moderately successful. very successful in the case of ultimate spider-man.

he's not eic anymore, that's axel alonso, but alonso (and tom brevoort) is basically carrying on with quesada's work, and while i think events such as the current avx are cheap and depressing, sales are good.

I'm still wondering what went through their heads when they decided "Hey you know what would be totally cool? Have the Avengers and the X-Men beat each other up like schoolkids over conflicting plans! You know what would be totally boring? Having the Avengers and the X-Men team up to kick the asses of a combination of Avengers and X-Men villains and bicker a lot while they do it! Why on earth would we want to see heroes struggling to work together to fight villains? That's just silly! It's not like we just decided to invest a shitload of time and money and effort into and stake our reputations on a summer blockbuster movie about exactly that!"
brooms: (bridget)

[personal profile] brooms 2012-08-18 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
apparently, they're trying to centralize editorial control more and make it all one office instead of avengers office ran by brevoort and x-office ran by nick lowe.

since the avengers is the apple of the company's eye right now, they're breaking the x-men to make it fit under the avengers' wing/avengers-run world. but the x-men have been independent for too long, so the solution was to put a question mark over their independence, dismantle utopia and discredit their leadership. thus avx.

that's what went through their heads.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-08-18 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's just...stupid.
brooms: (bridget)

[personal profile] brooms 2012-08-18 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
it's offensive as well, since the x-men's whole schtick is that they're a stand in for minorities.

Oh man, I didn't even pick up on the skeevy implications of that! >:( Ewww. And the fact that they are different from the rest of the Marvel Universe in some ways is pretty damn important, so Marvel wanting to screw that up is really DNW.
