People wanted another one, so...

PANFANDOM REC MEME

"I ship it!"
"I want fic!"
"I want art!"
"I don't care what it is, but I want it!"
"Where's the fandom?"

Rec meme! You ask for recs, and others provide (or fill!).

Maybe there's something you'd really like to see but you can't find it. Why not ask for help? It might be out there! Or maybe there's something you really loved reading and you want someone to geek over it with. Why not rec it to someone else? Maybe they'll love it too! Who knows, someone out there might be looking for something that sounds exactly like someone you know just created.

Don't feel bad about reccing your own stuff, either! Apparently someone else wants to see it, right?

Want - Post Apocalyptic Movies or TV shows

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking for things set post-apocalyptic or possibly during. Can be due to natural disaster, man made, end of world, aliens or whatever.

Most setups seem to be disaster>fight back, disaster>most people miraculously survive, disaster>out drive/fly/run things or disaster>loads die>fight back. I tend to find this unrealistic and would expect a lot of the after section of a show to be, well, recovery and ensuring survival. NOT going after the aliens or whatever (looking at you Falling Skies).
Specifically ones where it's more earth/humanity surviving. Be it going into hiding, remains of civilisation coming together afterwards, scavenging or the like.

Kind of like Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 was about people just getting back to families and rebuilding.

The Book of Eli kicks quite a lot of ass, IMHO :-)

Walking Dead, too, fits the bill.

If you're interested in books of this sort I'd highly recommend "Alas, Babylon," "Earth Abides" and "The Passage." The first two might be harder to find, as they were written back in the 1940s and '50s. The last can be found just about everywhere right now. "Earth Abides" in particular sounds like its right up your alley, as it covers a couple of generations and the regression/progression of the development of society.

Haven't seen all of these, but I know they should fit what you are looking for.

TV:
Jericho
Jeremiah
Survivors

Movies:
The Divide (This might be not quite what you are looking for, but it's close.)
A Boy and His Dog
Six-String Samurai
The Postman
The Road
Book of Eli

Not a TV show, but if you read manga at all I highly recommend 7 Seeds.

like others, i recommend the book of eli! has a slight religious theme, but it's not the preachy kind or anything. it definitely focuses on rebuilding society (and survival, of course).
zombieland is another good one, it (obvs) has zombies and is a little more comedic than most of its genre but it's also rather dark and sobering at times too.

if you like vidya, i'd suggest fallout 3 or new vegas.

also, this list may help!

If you're into novels, I'd recommend One Second After by William R. Forstchen. It's about an EMP wiping out the power grid and all the electronics in the USA. Quite chilling.

Well, there's a new show debuting in September called Revolution. I dont' know how good it's going to be.

Here's a synopsis: Revolution takes place in a post-apocalyptic future. Fifteen years earlier, an unknown phenomenon permanently disabled all advanced technology on the planet, ranging from computers and electronics to car engines, jet engines, and batteries. People were forced to adapt to a world without technology, and due to the collapse of public order, many areas are ruled by warlords and militias. The series focuses on the Matheson family, who possess an item that is the key to not only finding out what happened fifteen years ago, but also a possible way to reverse its effects. However, they must elude various enemy groups who want to possess that power for themselves.

The series is created by Eric Kripke and produced by J. J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Iron Man director Jon Favreau directed the pilot episode.

"The Day of the Triffids" is a classic of the genre, and laid a lot of the tropes that you see in other works. An obvious influence on "28 Days Later". All attempts to bring it to the screen are a bit... ropey, in my opinion. And often try to add neat fixes at the end. But read the book: it's not that long, and it's good.

If you're after comedy then give Shaun of the Dead a try. It plays to a lot of the tropes but with a twist on the standard zombie film.
