Oh, OP, thank you. I just laughed so hard that if there was anyone else in the house I think they would have been concerned.

That being said, I do dislike it when people downplay just how awful the man was because he wrote the Declaration of Independence.

(Hamilton and Jay for favorite founding fathers, by the way.)

As a (student) historian, I think "awful" might be a bit of an overstatement. Flawed? Hypocritical? A product of his time/privilege? Sure, you can say all of those things, and more. But "awful"... eh. In my opinion saying such a thing is just as one-sided as the mindless worship you see in more conservative settings.

(Also, Hamilton ftw.)

You're absolutely correct. I wasn't picking my words very carefully when I typed that comment, I'm afraid - what you've said is much better, thank you.

I can't say I've ever seen mindless worship of Jefferson in a conservative setting, though! That would make for one interesting rally.

I guess it depends on the conservative setting, haha. I've heard a lot of Tea Partiers (including some of my extended family, unfortunately) treat the guy like an incarnation of Jesus or something.

Oh man. I've got a lot of Republican family acquaintances, but I can safely say I've never heard that. Just a lot about how Obama is ruining the country and Sarah Palin is a great example for all women.

Sometimes I fantasize about scientists making a time machine and sending all the idiots who want to live in past back there. (There would be no consequences to us in the present, of course. Because it's my fantasy.)

ESPECIALLY the people who say the rules/laws in the Bible and the Constitution (usually the same people) are the end-all, be-all and ignore that we live in a different time.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you me? I totally fantasize about that, too.

I'd give 'em all about two days before they went around the twist.

Present/future all the way. I may studying past times, but they aren't worth giving up, y'know, civil rights. Or improved medicines. Or the radio. Or not having to wear corsets. Etcetera...

Just tell them that you've built a time machine, but they have to be in stasis for the trp. Then while they're knocked out, send 'em to a deserted island set up as a historical re-enactment. :D

I don't understand why Tea Partiers would like Jefferson at all? That makes absolutely no sense (but these are the same people that claim to be so "pro-Constitution" despite obviously never reading the document)

In fact I hear conservatives bitch about him all the time

Small government and all that. Of course they conveniently pretend that he was any sort of Christian that would be recognized as such today, so there's that.

Oh I forgot that Tea Partiers pretend to believe in small government while contradictorily also advocating for all kinds of fascist government overreach (social legislation such as outlawing abortion, gay rights, etc)

How is he that awful? I can't think of anything specific about him that makes him more awful than any other politician of the time period -- the only thing that comes to mind immediately is his relationship with Sally Hemings and we probably won't ever know all of the details regarding that. It could be possible that they were both in love, people just naturally assume the worst because she was his slave and there are obvious ethical issues that stem from that
