The term PoC was actually a shock for me when I first encountered it on the internet. I was taught all my life growing up that it was an offensive term.

I'm not here to get into an argument though on what the right term should be. I just wanted to state a, "huh, isn't it interesting how we all use and perceive the same language so differently?" type of thing.

are you getting "person of color" and "colored person" confused? (they are two very distinct terms) or were you really taught POC was derogatory, jw?

I was taught both were terms I should never ever say or use.

Same.

Just weighing in as an other 'PoC' to say that I also find the term hugely unpleasant, and never use it to refer to people. Like, I really can't see how this became the politically correct term to design everybody who isn't white. Everything about it feels wrong to me.

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-08-21 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it was invented by white sociology students.

Different anon here.

But both those terms are insulting here. It's such a PC sounding word, all sides of the fence get offended.

We just stick to black/asian/middle eastern/indigenous/etc as descriptors.
