Describe Your Fandom! (take 2)
(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)I recently realized that I'm fascinated by listening to meta about fandoms. I love people thinking critically about trends in their fandom, and discussing them. So my challenge, should you choose to accept it, is this: describe your fandom! Pretend like it's a small nation, and talk about any cultures and customs it has. Give us an insider look, basically - something people wouldn't know unless they're in the fandom.
(Some sample questions: How wanky is it? Is it more or less unified, or divided into several fractions that don't really mingle? How important is shipping? What are some common fandom-specific plots you see all the time? How do people feel about the canon/creators? Which characters are woobified, revered, bashed? What are some silly but entertaining in-jokes everyone overuses? What are some trends you noticed, and why did/do they happen?)
Basically, what makes your fandom unique - the good, the bad, and the awesome.
Re: Describe Your Fandom! (take 2)
My favorite slice of the Avengers fandom, and the most unique and amazing and high-caliber — is the non-text tumblr fandom. The gifsets, the meaningful/symbolic collages with quotes and themes and other photoshop tributes, the visual construction of parallels and echoes and character development via gifs and photosets, the glorious inventing of mythology and symbolism and fusion with other fandoms and concepts (like the Avengers as Disney characters, or as mythological figures, or biblical angels, or GoT houses), They're glorious and amazing and I have never been in a fandom that produces this kind of stuff so well.
The text-based part of the tumblr fandom is an insane mess of wanky entitled brats and/or Loki stans who can't understand that their headcanon =/= everyone else's headcanon and are really possessive and presumptuous about their favorite characters. I'm still wondering where the wall that keeps them separate is hidden.
AO3 is a mixture of unbelievably self-indulgent bullshit that happens to be well-written, and actual really good stories. Also, it's 1/4 AUs, especially high school AUs, and 1/4 Loki/Everyone, often overlapping.
I really hate how dominant the kinkmeme is. See, in kinkmemes, it's extremely rude to shame people for their prompts and it's not the place to give constructive criticism, but so many people — the vast majority, I'd say — post their fics outside of the kinkmeme that there's this whole avenue through which horrible OOC idfic gets dumped into the fandom outside of the kinkmeme without the criticism it would get otherwise, and enters the fanon consciousness.
Zero shipwars that I'm aware of, probably because every single popular non-canon pairing is of the type that would be impossible to be made canon. Therefore, no bashing of canon love-interests and no wars between people who, say, ship Bruce/Tony vs Steve/Tony, since neither of those ships are or ever will be canon.
Shipping is way too dominant within the fandom for my tastes, since I care about the gen and the plots far more than the ships, but the shipping is generally civil and live-and-let-live, so I don't whine too much.
Somewhat wanky — not very wanky across the board, but in some areas, the wank is over 9000. Especially the Loki wank.
Stupid cliches like moron!Thor, CAPSLOCK!Thor, blushing!innocent!Steve, brainwashed!innocent!Loki, terrifying!robot!Natasha, etc, are unfortunately so ubiquitous they're annoying instead of entertaining.
I could say more, but I'm lazy.
Re: Describe Your Fandom! (take 2)
My main fandom is Pokemon. There isn't a lot of wank, but there is a group of people who only like the original Pokemon games and like to say that the new games "aren't real Pokemon" and find bullshit reasons to complain about every new game. Everyone else tends to hate these people; however, those people aren't usually very active in the fandom and can usually be avoided unless something Pokemon-related comes up in a place not solely dedicated to Pokemon fandom. (Basically, Pokemon fansites tend to not be wanky, but if you go to a generic Japanese pop culture/video game fansite, there will be a lot of people who only like the old games talking about how the new games suck and starting drama.)
It's kind of a huge franchise so there are some corners that specific types stick to, but there's a lot of overlap. For example, people in the manga fandom tend to be involved in the game fandom as well. I feel like the biggest gap is between people who mainly like the games for competitive play, and people who care about the story/adaptions/fanworks/etc. Not that there's no one who does both, but as far as I've noticed, those are the two corners of fandom with the least overlap.
I haven't been reading much Pokemon fic lately, but the most obnoxiously common one is Mary Sue Starts a Journey with a Special Pokemon. A shipping plot that's cropped up fairly recently is "Team Plasma [villain group] wins and forces Touko [the girl in my icon] to marry N [villain group's leader] and become their queen!" These fics tend to be very, very creepy. ._.
For a while most of the fandom was really whiny and constantly complained about the canon. But recently that's become uncool, and so people are starting to act like fans again. xD A lot of people still hate the anime, though. Even the people in the anime fandom hate the anime. People don't usually express their opinions about the creators.
There hasn't been a lot of character-bashing lately, at least not when it comes to large sections of fandom all hating one character. A few years ago there were a lot of people who hated Kotone/Lyra because she replaced another character (Crys) in a remake, but most people have either started to like her, or at least quieted down.
We have a billion in-jokes and memes. I can't even begin to list them. Seems the most common one is how Ash has been ten for over ten years.
I have homework so I'm not going to write more. 'xD
Re: Describe Your Fandom! (take 2)
(Anonymous) 2012-08-19 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)Thank you lots for doing being helpful! It was really sweet of you. And it did let me read about a couple more fandoms, so I'm pleased. Sorry, I would've commented sooner, but I was pretty busy.
Anyways, thanks again! :3
