I'm curious now.

Given for the most part it's tying into a very specific anime/manga kink/cultural trope, rather then anything broader - is their a pc alternative term?

Or is the whole concept considered fundamentally problematic so as to always be offensive?

I think the problem with the word 'trap' is that it's reinforcing the very common, very dangerous narrative of trans people being deceivers who are just trying to trick cis people into having sex with them. People get killed because of this on a regular basis.

On the other hand, what else are we going to call the anime trope? I'm not into it at all, but 'stop fapping to that' doesn't really work as a strategy for change.

This is why I agree with the original poster and think it's fine to use in a context where you're talking about characters and tropes. I mentioned "seme" and "uke" above. Those are character tropes in yaoi and need to be used to discuss yaoi, but just don't apply to RL gay men. It's when you start trying to apply it to RL gay men that it gets problematic.

The difference imo is that I don't think there's a great deal of real-world harm done by the myth that 'seme' and 'uke' buys into, not any more. There are a FEW people out there who think that gay tops are all rapists and gay bottoms are all 50s housewives but on the whole they're not out there killing gay men because of this.

You think only a FEW people think that? Really? You haven't noticed the whole bottom = feminine and all femme men regardless of sexuality = gay bottoms thing?

There doesn't seem to be much point to further this conversation then as our views of the world are incredibly skew.

The harm in question very rarely amounts to murder, whereas the harm caused by the 'trap' myth regularly does. Doesn't matter how many people believe it, they're not killing people. But whatever, if you like yelling at people you can go back to tumblr :)
