I find prompts; like MMAM on the lj sherlockbbc comm, or sherlock100. There's also a seasonal Sherlock community, sherlockmas. And there's Bingo comms, like kink_bingo and hc_bingo.

I go to Tummblr and make a post ranting about it. It's really surprising how much that has actually helped at times.

I write short fic for various bingos, like kink bingo or angst bingo or h/c bingo. Helps clear up any excess words and then I can go back to the big fic I was stuck on.

I've done the past three rounds and I've really enjoyed it.

I toss the main characters in another situation and just write dialog. Dialog. Dialog. Dialog. Usually, that will jog an idea from my head over the main story.

Prompts. Kink Bingo, Angst Bingo, H/C Bingo (pretty much every bingo round happening now except Cotton Candy Bingo because I'm not feeling like writing a lot of fluff), Fic Promptly, comment_fic, kink memes...they help get me going.

Oh! I'm on Cotton Candy Bingo, too (that's the one I'm gonna work on after I finish H/C Bingo). I'm always up for a little fluff.

I'm also on Kink Bingo. I finished that last week. (-:

I was on Schmoop Bingo, but they pretty much stopped last year. )-:

Inspiration can be tricky. It cannot be defined, yet is the source of almost every story written. There are ways to inspire yourself, placing your mind in the right position to be most receptive to new ideas. What most people do not realise that there are one or two other, more artificial ways to inspire yourself.

There is a ritual that can be performed. Most who know of it will stress the importance of the time of the year and of incantations that need to be read aloud, but these are unimportant.

It requires blood, as often the oldest ways do. You must obtain the blood of someone, and specifically it must be blood from a wound that killed them. You must drink this blood whilst writing. For every sample of blood that you collect in this fashion, you will receive inspiration to write one story. These stories will literally be about anything.

Things that could happen, or even have happened.

Things that wouldn't, or shouldn't, happen.

There is one catch.

After the first couple of stories, you will feel a new inspiration that cannot be dampened.

And you will begin to write.

And before you know what you are doing

You will be typing an admission of guilt

Telling everyone what you have done

The crimes you have committed

The blood

The old man near death..

The mother-to-be...

That poor child...

Oh dear God no.

Go back to the outline, possibly work on fragments of it in longhand. If it's REALLY refusing to happen in that horrible painful way it sometimes dose, I just stop for a few days and try again. I'll start something else if the inspiration is there - keeping the words flowing helps - but I hate when I accidentally bury a stuck fic under distractions.

Sometimes, I get high. Well, I would if I could. Weed is hard to come by these days.

Alternatively, I do daydreaming/lucid dreaming and try to remember everything afterwards.

Just sit my ass down and look at ideas until I find something I think I could write and then write it. It's awkward at first but the more I write the more I get through the Writer's Block.

But most of the time i only do that after I've been unable to write for like a month^^

Re: Writers Block

(Anonymous) 2012-08-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I sit down and write.

No excuses.

No BS.

I just sit my butt down in that chair and I write.

So maybe it's horrible. Maybe each sentence is like pulling a tooth, awful and excruciating and nightmare-inducing. Maybe I'll wind up scrapping it all and rewriting the entire thing. But so what? All writing is practice, and hell if I'm going to let writer's block get in the way of practice. As far as I'm concerned, that's like being on a sports team and saying, "Boo hoo, I don't feel like going to practice today!" Yeah, well, you decided to join the team, that means you buck up and go to practice even if you feel like you can't do it today. Even if it's harder than usual, even if it's not the best practice you've ever had. Even if it's the worst practice you've ever had. Because even the worst practice you've ever had is better than no practice at all.

You want to play on the team? Then shut up and go to practice, yo. Or in this case, sit your butt down in that chair and start writing.

No BS.

No excuses.

write nonsense

I heard that pumping out 500 a word every day is good to at least get you writing, and I guess the warm up might eventually lead back to what you were working on and give you insight on how to proceed if you are stuck in plot or characterization or something

or write a scene in the future, with different variations and see how to get there? or if you even want to get there or change course

I stopped putting so much pressure on myself to write a masterpiece.

I'd been recovering from depression, and I finally realized it wasn't an on/off switch, it was going to take time to get back to that place where I could write again.

I also dropped the story I'd been so obsessed with before, and put it on the backburner. Now I've got ideas again, and I've begun something new.

Revovering depressed writer high five! So much for the mentally ill brilliant writer cliche - I've been struggling to write anything for months.

Go off and do something else for a bit. Something not related to writing. Shoot some pool, play video games, watch music videos, anything. Eventually my brain goes WRITE NOW and I go back to it.

This. It works best for me if I'm doing something else creative; I'm always able to figure out what wasn't working for me and go back to writing with a new perspective.
