Weird Associations?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-19 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I‘ve been reading a WIP and every time I read the title, which is a fairly commonplace turn of phrase, I start singing ‘The last one to know; The last one to show; I was the last one; You thought you'd see there’ from the song Friends in Low Places. Does anyone else do this?

And I’m not talking about anything that is intentionally trying to evoke an association – like something titled Doe, a Deer. Something like the phrase ‘Want to believe’ making you immediately think of the X-Files, even though that phrase is fairly generic.

Do you see cherry pie and think ‘and a damn fine cup of coffee’? Do you hear Bust a Move and think of that stupid TV movie Camp Cucamonga?

Lemons will forever be associated with SGA and Rodney... and I don't even like Rodney that much so it's annoying to keep having that reminder...

I associate everything to everything to the point where I'll see something completely random and just giggle. For example, crackers and cheese (the prepackaged kind) are only going to make me think of Gravity Falls. And don't even get me started on The X-Files. Bees are either going to make me think of The X-Files or Arrested Development.

I think Arrested Development is the biggest offender, though, since half the show is inside jokes.

Bees make me think of Doctor Who.

But any type of slow sad walk makes me think of Arrested Development and Charlie Brown...

X-Files and KFC gets me thinking about Red Museum. Every. Single. Time.

...Every time I see the words "I don't dance", I always start mentally singing "I know you can, not a chance!". Yep, from High School Musical 2.

This is going to haunt me for the rest of my life.

Every single time I hear Christina Perry's "A Thousand Years" I think of Sherlock Holmes, in general, which is weird because I thought of it WAY before I ever found a fanvid of it or anything. It's just automatic "Hey, the Sherlock Holmes song is on the radio." Wtf?

Almost every time someone in my family jokes about being old or something we end up quoting the "Chocolate with Nuts" episode from Spongebob.

. . .don't know if I'm doing this right.

I associate bedding stores with Harry Potter. It's totally unintentional, but thinking about it I guess I read one of the books in a Bed Bath and Beyond?

I've got some other ones, but I can't really remember them unless I see the trigger, if you know what I mean.

I can't hear the phrase, "The first rule" without my head finishing, "about Fight Club is you do not speak about Fight Club."

When I look at a clock and it says 11:21 I immediately think "X-Files time!" and make a wish.

Apparently I can't hear the phrase "down by the water" without getting the songs of that name by PJ Harvey and The Decemberists simultaneously stuck in my head.

not sure if this is applicable to the subject, but every planet has a personality to me, and eating outside always makes my food tastes like ants??? i don't really... understand LMAO

also, some books or shows always remind me of certain songs that i listened to frequently around the time that i started watching or reading the book/show, and vice versa. like - okay, embarrassing example, but whatever - yugioh always reminds me of evanescence and linkin park, since they were always on the radio during commercials.

I sort of associate Cthulhu with cheese curds because August Derleth was born in the same Wisconsin town where Culver's restaurants started.

I often put on shows and movies as background noise while doing chores or working on craft and sewing projects and at least temporarily I will associate whatever I was watching with whatever I was doing and might find myself choosing to watch the same movie again the next time I need to do that thing. For example, there was a period of several years where it just seemed natural to watch the original Star Wars trilogy while baking Christmas cookies.

When I listen to the first Kings of Leon album or any track off it I think of pretending to be sick in Scotland, reading Titus Groan, and making myself bring up weird jelly-like clots of phlegm. I never ever think of that day without KoL as a prompt.
