I think people are well aware that media from earlier eras can be problematic. They can reflect some of the worst attitudes of those times.

The reason people are so quick to jump on current things is that everyone is supposed to know better now.

Agreed. For example, I feel icky looking at A Different World at times because I see problematic things in it now (e.g. relations between women, the handling of some racial topics like the Mammy archetype).

I know the show didn't mean any harm then, but it bothers me now.

I've seen a lot of old shows/books/movies/etc. judged by modern standards and the creators called horrible, horrible people because they were a product of their time (even if they were progressive for their time).

I should have written most people. I believe there is a certain subset that really doesn't get how very much attitudes have changed and, of course, there are the ones who wilfully misunderstand.

Yes, the writers were a product of their time. But that doesn't make them above approach. Those things are still problematic, and just because they were in the past doesn't mean we can't point out the problematic aspects.

Don't get me wrong, I love lots of problematic things, and lots of old shows are really awesome. But it is okay to look at things critically.

Maybe that's the reason some people jump, but there are some people who search for reasons to be offended and then get all upset when they get offended. Sometimes it's not a treatise on political correctness. Sometimes, it's just a TV show.

THIS.

I can actually forgive a lot of problematic stuff in older works, because the writers are a product of their times and the attitudes they grew up in.
Nothing exists in a vacuum.

But to have those same attitudes in newer works? NOPE.
