Ahhhhh, makes sense.

Here are other pictures from the comic for reference, if you're curious:

The second link doesn't work, but the first is lovely.

...Is it seriously done in MS paint? Because while simplistic, the art is still very beautiful and stylish.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-19 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I forgot an "f" at the end, sorry! (".gif")

No, it's actually done in Photoshop, and sadly stylized panels like this one are a little rare, but when the author goes out, he does very nice stuff. He is very good at color theory. (In fact, I think he released a very lucrative Photoshop add-on related to colors and palettes and such.)

Most of the art is much more simple to allow for speedier updates. Sometimes fans submit some art for some of the big flash animations, which is why sometimes there are pictures in noticeably different styles in those, but guest art and guest music aside, the rest is all Andrew Hussie. Add to it handling the printing of books, cons, and other various things, and I'm amazed he has any free time at all, if he even does.

If I remember right, the first "MS Paint Adventure" was Jailbreak, and the first panel of that one really was made in MS Paint (I think, and I'm not sure of this, that the version you can see in the website is a second version remaking old panels), but the author switched to Photoshop later on because it worked better for him, but he still uses that MS Paint-ish art style anyway.

I don't know if he does the gif/animated panels on Photoshop too, but the art itself is done there and the big flash animations are done in Flash.

*ashamed I didn't see that only the 'f' was missing*

Photoshop looks like it would be much easier and faster, yea. But even if only some of the panels were created in MS paint that's really cool and impressive; it's nice that he kept the style, too. I've never read it, but some of the art I've seen here from it is very good.

It's neat of them to give fans a chance to be on their website too, if I'm understanding you correctly and they upload fanart to the official site sometimes. And I didn't even know music was involved in this...hmm. That's a lot of work.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-19 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't see it until I checked back from where I copied it. I don't know how I ate that character in the copypasting, sorry.

I'm honestly not sure how it worked out, but the Art Team and the Music Team are fans that posted their stuff on the forums and eventually some sort of arrangement was made there so that they submitted art more directly to the author. vov

They even make prints and calendars and stuff:

http://whatpumpkin.com/

Sometimes Hussie has approached talented fanartists himself for art help (like http://duedlyfirearms.tumblr.com/ , recently), but I don't know the details of that.

There is some of the art they submitted posted here:

http://mspaforums.com/showthread.php?31734-Art-Index-Cascade

(Both the ones used in the flash animations and the ones that didn't make the cut.)

No big deal friendly anon!

I'm not sure I've ever heard of anything like that happening before. More people should do that.

The stuff in the shop is cute! And a lot cheaper than I expected it to be.

The animations were seriously adorable and well done. Oh fandom...so talented it makes me jealous. D:

I too think it's super neat and that more people should try to make the best of their fandom and without hurting others or themselves:

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/salesfaq.html

They were careful about contracts and all the legal stuff, so no one ends up losing!

Whatever negative aspects the Homestuck fandom might have, yeah, they produce some actual good quality stuff, if only by being so large a fandom.

I wish more companies did the same.

You should check out the actual end result of all those sample art pics (and the authors art which is in here a lot, with many of those colors you mentioned)

Also, read the comic! BECOME ONE OF US. THIS IS EVEN BETTER IN CONTEXT.

So...I just watched this. Is that what tripping balls feels like? Cause I imagine that's what it feels like. The art is still really neat and distinctive, though!

I have no timeeeeeeeeee, I just starting reading comics and have what feels like 40 things just sitting around waiting for me to read them. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY?! If I was an android this would go so much faster.

It's only several thousand pages long now! (multi page updates a day many times) You can do it!

It's got the insanely huge rabid fandom for a reason. It also did it in a shockingly short amount of time, considering it's only been around for 3 years and 4 months.

If we count all of MS paint adventures and not just homestuck, it's pretty much the longest webcomic on the web. Though some pages are really short, and some pages are 14 minutes long flashes, so it can vary.

Sometimes Hussie has approached talented fanartists himself for art help (like http://duedlyfirearms.tumblr.com/ , recently), but I don't know the details of that.

Don't know if you're still checking this thread out, anon, but the whole thing behind that - if you're curious - is that one of the newer characters likes to draw pictures of other characters as a giant shoutout to all the comic's fanartists. Several of duedlyfirearms' works appear as posters in the aforementioned character's room and as .jpgs attached to one or two chatlogs.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That first picture is actually by one of the members of the art team, not Hussie:

http://doodle-master.deviantart.com/gallery/26512896#/d39ohvj

The second one is his work, though.

DA

Wait, you can actually see a little more of her face here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-1HXpwmZeU&feature=related

I had actually forgotten about that.

(I like how she's all like "... Are you fucking kidding me?! That's cheating! This is a ship to ship battle! You can't do that!")

That's what my reaction would be. And as weird as this sounds: I love her colors!

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I know! I don't even like that shade of blue that much, but she rocks it.
