one of the main reasons the fandom is insane as it is is that it's made up of a lot of women who have never actually been in fandom and don't know how to behave.

Cassandra Clare evidently didn't know how to behave in fandom either, and neither did any of her enabling friends. It's not all about prior knowledge, it's also about whether or not you have any gut-level artistic ethics or not.
