I used to have a housemate that got called "witch" as an insult, usually by men she wouldn't fuck. She was kind of hippy and had long black hair.

That's because witches are a part of folklore traditions from pagans and not generally connected to the extremely short-living Wiccan religion.

If you honestly find it offensive to call someone a witch, you're deluded. It's no worse than "troll" or "gremlin" or any other fantastical creature. Regardless of whether some extremely tiny minority decided to call themselves that, too.

Yes, it's offensive to call a person who has an undesirable attitude undesirable a 'witch' or a 'bitch' as well, as that's misogynistic. Why not call it like it is, and go with 'nasty person'.

It is a remnant of some uber-religious (Christian) places/times; in some places, calling a woman a witch is to say that she's ugly AND has a nasty temper.
