Does she look like a drunken bum???

There is a difference between missing basic hygiene and missing a flattering style. It's obvious she knows what a hairbrush is and put care into her appearance, even if it doesn't completely hit the mark. Those two kinds of criticism are not the same or equal.

You definitely do have a point there with the difference between those kinds of criticisms, but actually my "drunken bum" comment was just one example (I think someone used it to describe GRRM) of the insults I've seen. I've seen non-drunken-bum ugly authors get appearance-bashed too with weird insults like "he has a creepy/serial killer face" and "omg literal neckbeard why would he do that", and "wow he let himself go" and "he has such a punchable-looking face" and "he looks like a fat chauvinist perv", etc.

But OTOH, there's a lot less "omg why wouldn't you just make yourself look better?" double-standard-holding — they hurl nasty insults and leave it at that, whereas with women, it seems like everyone's utterly baffled and appalled at the idea that a woman would ever (gasp!) willingly not make herself as attractive as she could be. :\
