Yeah, I fear that might be a long wait - as Disney movies are seen a a "family value" in many circles, and the outrage/uproar from disgruntled parents would be more than what Disney's willing to handle. Sad, but it's a reality.

While it's true that Disney is family friendly, they are also very gay-friendly. Heck, some argue that they HAVE had gay characters--Jumba and Pleakley from Lilo and Stitch, for example.

True, but they're taking it baby steps (as with the non-white princesses). Even if their personal stance might be very pro-gay, they're not going to risk their livelihoods by angering the parents of their target audience.

I think they know what they're doing, but know that the time simply isn't right for the larger public to embrace it. Hence me saying it might be a long wait - as for how long, that really depends a bit on the course society will take.

I'd give them more props than just 'baby' steps wrt to non-white princesses. Four out of seven of the Disney renaissance princesses have been women of color. Of course I still want to see more of them though.

I know what you're saying, but there's also timeframe to consider.

The POC characters were all later princesses (I think Jasmine was first, and that was 1992). Historically, that is a fairly long time after the beginning of civil rights movements working to emancipate racial minorities.

I'm not saying thing will go at an equally slow pace now, but it may well be that we'll need to wait another 20 years for a princess who is say, transgender.

I hope I'm wrong, actually, but I don't really see it happening in the next decade. Perhaps for a supporting character, perhaps, but not a full-blown Disney princess.

Er from 1959-1989 Disney had ZERO princess films though, and in fact with just a couple of small exceptions (Jungle Book which did star a POC, Sword in the Stone, and Black Cauldron all of their films released during that time period starred animals).

So really there is just... two periods of princess films, the classic princesses (1938-1959) and the renaissance and post renaissance princess films (1989-current). That's why I mentioned the latter.

I never said an lgbtq character would happen very soon, but I do think that it will happen eventually. I'm also not arguing that Disney is omg so progressive.

I think we're actually mostly on the same page but phrasing it differently.

Not to mention Esmeralda, Nani and Lilo, and Kida (and Audrey from the same movie). There have been other non-white heroines--Shanti, the three princess from Mulan II, Tiger Lily, the girl from Brother Bear 2, the wife from Emperor's New Groove...maybe more, but I don't remember them.

No totally. In fact during the Disney renaissance/post renaissance period there were more films starring WOC then there were white ladies period.
