LBGTQ recs

(Anonymous) 2012-08-22 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Right now, I'm feeling a need in my life for works of fiction that have LBGTQ protagonists/important characters, but whose sexuality is not the whole point of the story. I don't care about the medium, books, films, comics, whatever, I'd just really like to something that's good, with a queer character where everything isn't about the gender of the people they fancy.

I haven't been having much luck with finding things, so I thought I'd try crowdsourcing to people more knowledgeable than I. Any suggestions?

You know about Torchwood, right? And there's some very matter-of-fact gay romances in Spartacus, though they're not exactly protagonists.

Yes, I do know about Torchwood. :) And by Spartacus you mean the new series, right? I'll definitely check that out, it fits in with my other interests anyway. Thanks!

Science-fictiony:

Slonczewski: Door into Ocean, Daughter of Elysium, Brain Plague, and The Highest Frontier. Very much in the mold of, "yeah, it's a same sex relationship, now lets get on with the story."

Bujold: Ethan of Athos is pretty much a spy thriller with a gay man. Mirror Dance should get honorable mention because of Bel Thorne.

More:

Robert J. Sawyer's Neanderthal Parallax is worth a mention for having one of those, "everyone's bisexual" cultures, although a heterosexual relationship is primary.

The short story collection Broken Time Blues is really good and has multiple LGBTQ protagonists.

You could play the Dragon Age series. You get to choose what sexuality the main characters have, and you could choose to pursue a same-sex romance, too. (Or you could choose not to, if none of the options tickle your fancy.) Since the main plot of both games concern things beyond the romances I think it works?

For comics: Batwoman and Young Avengers! Especially Batwoman.

The Fever Crumb series by Phillip Reeve has a bisexual protagonist - her sexuality doesn't come into play in the first book but they're all pretty awesome and Phillip Reeve is amazing at integrating romance subplots.

Phillip Reeve is amazing at EVERYTHING. I love all his stuff, pretty much, and it's always so nice to run into other people who do too. Why is his stuff not way more famous than it is? Why?

Ikr? There's talks of a film version of Mortal Engines but it might just be rumour. So much love for those books. <3

He's especially good at romance subplots, though - he has this amazing ability to properly develop the relationship, integrate it into the plot so it's not just extra baggage, and make it so that neither character is a 'love interest'.

Seconding the rec for Batwoman. Start with Elegy, and then go into her current ongoing series.

You could try the Warehouse 13 tv show. It has 2 LGBT chars (Helena Wells and Steve Jinks) but it's not the focus of their characters.

Lost Girl! The main character is bisexual succubus private detective, and the plot is mostly about the private detecting and/or Important Worldbuilding
