That being said... is your beta talking to you while cutting chunks out of your story or just doing it willy nilly because... WOW! Not cool. Make a note, say "Hey, this really drags things down" or "this really interrupts the flow, maybe you should cut it" but to flat out delete? That's cold.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)Sure, fanfic is different. But anyone who aspires to be a writer needs to get used to that sort of thing.

That being said, if the beta won't tell you why they think such and such a passage isn't working, how much are you learning as a writer from the process? There could be any number of reasons to want to cut something out, and playing a guessing game seems a waste of time. Beta reading is not professional editing by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a useful tool to figure out what you might need to improve on. If you aren't getting that information, what's the point?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)I personally wouldn't, it made me very uncomfortable when one beta cut and pasted and changed my fic making it more grammatically correct but broke the flow of the story and made the character's thoughts too stilted. Perhaps OP if you don't like you should think about another beta? Sounds like you might also be taikng your frustrations out on others...
