Rant about gynekologist (probably TMI)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I went to my gynekologist today and I'm starting to hate it more than the dentist. Since going to the dentist has me about an inch from a panic attack that says something.

Seriously though I went nearly 12 hours ago and I'm still sore, she used the lube really sparingly =/

And what's with all the questions about "Are you really single or with a woman?" of course I can't be in a relationship with a man and have non-penetrative sex.

Gah, my gynekologist was just really judgy today, I didn't like it, especially when she was judgy while shoving a finger inside me.

Sorry, I needed to rant and it's not exactly like I can discuss this at the dinner table.

Tell her to use more lube next time. Glare at her until she complies.

The "lol all hetero sex is penetrative sex", unfortunately, i don't know how to fix. She has the excuse of needing to know what you've been up to, but I don't know how to get her to be, you know, non judging.

I think I was a bit too stunned to think about it this time but next time she won't get her hands on my private parts without a lot of lube ;)

Normally she is a way better doctor but when I explained to her today that I'm in therapy for a mood disorder and asked if the taking the pill can have positive effect she didn't tell me that the pill can make depression worse. And given that we decided I should try a new one she really should've.

Find a new doctor. If you want to keep going to the same place, just when you make an appt ask for a different doctor.

OP

Normally she's a way better doctor, probably gonna give her a second chance (and demand more lube the next time). But if she keeps that up I'm definitely gonna look for a new one.

I don't think my gynocologist used any lube when she did my pap exam. I bled for a couple of hours after and ruined my pants so yeah I totally get where you're coming from.

Are you feeling better now?

some, still a bit upset but thankfully the urge to cry went away.

That sounds horrible I hope you have a new doctor now because that really doesn't sound like someone who should've gotten a medical license.

It's almost impossible to find doctors who are willing to take new patients where I am so I don't think I can get a new doctor any time soon. Hopefully you'll have better luck with yours.

i agree with op on this one, that seems problematic and worth a complaint.

That's...not normal. And not cool at all.

I'm sorry that it's hard to find a new doctor in your area, but there must be some sort of action that you can take.

sorry, I seem to have a tendency to mix spelling from my language with English spelling at the moment.

Thanks for pointing it out :)

My completely honest thought? Find another gyno. Seriously. There are plenty out there, and there's no need to go to one who's unnecessarily judgmental or who makes you uncomfortable.

My gyno, for example, is quick, gentle, and very understanding (he's also, well...a he, which I wouldn't have originally thought I'd be okay with. Don't limit yourself!). What's also pretty cool about him is that he and one of the nurses banter during the exam, which a) amuses me and b) puts me completely at ease. Find a doctor who jibes with you, who fits with your personality. You don't want your annual to always be something that you dread.

A while ago I felt like an idiot because I didn't know pap smears were supposed to have lube. My first pap smear was when I was thirteen and it had none. >:| /bitter forever

I would try to find a new gyno. This one sounds like she's not meeting your needs and not making you comfy.

It's stories like these that really make me worried about having my first exam. My doctors keep telling me I need to get one and I know I do but I've heard so many horror stories. Like this one chick who was in tears because they used the wrong size instrument because they didn't believe her when she said she was a virgin and therefore very tight.

I have never heard any good stories about that place. I'm a virgin so I can get away with not going for a while but I really dread the time when I'll have to go.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-23 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
OP

This was probably my third exam and it was the first one that went bad (I'm a virgin as well). I think you just need to be ready to tell your doctor in no uncertain terms when something hurts and you want him/her to stop. I just ended up being to stunned or whatever but as long as you keep your head together and don't let them talk you into anything it should be alright.

Also I think with most horror stories about doctors etc. we just have a wrong perception. The people who have bad experiences talk about for obvious reasons but people hardly ever talk about it when it goes good. Or can you imagine someone opening up a threat about how awesome her gynecologist appointment went?

Thank you for the advice. That's my problem. It's hard for me to speak up. I really wish I could get recommendations from other women in my area too but that doesn't seem to be an option.

That's true. The negative stories get passed along more. I just need to gather up my courage for this.

Thanks.

Do you have a friend that could go with you to the first appointment? Maybe this will put you more at ease since she could speak up for you if she notices that you're uncomfortable/in pain.

And to cancel out some of the negative stories: My gynecologist is awesome! She must have some sort of magical memory, or maybe she just takes notes, but she always remembers what was going on in my life the last time I was there and asks about it, even if my last appointment was like half a year ago. She keeps chatting to me when she examines me and it makes me feel more relaxed.

Well, just think about having cervical cancer and how much worse that is than laying with your legs spread apart and a speculum inside you for five or ten minutes.

Do you really need to get a pap smear, even if you're a virgin? My GP told me that I don't need to get one if I was a virgin, and I believed her. *nervous now*

They told me I don't need to for a couple of years.

However, because I'm over eighteen it's permanently on my chart so every time I go in they mention it. Every time when I say, "I thought I wouldn't need one until I'm older." They respond, "Oh yes, that's true. It's just good to get it done. You never know." But it's the nurses who bug me about it, not my doctors.

Nothing can top my first pap smear. I had a major panic attack that resulted in a seizure (at that time, a "panic attack" for me was feeling weird and passing out -- I was calm the whole time).

Oh, and every single pap smear I've had hurt like hell. It didn't matter who was doing it. The last doctor who did mine told me, "it's because your vagina is slightly slanted" -- WTF?!

Re: Rant about gynekologist (probably TMI)

I bet they're just clumsy as fuck and don't want to admit it. :V

J/K, I don't know what's the truth.

But that is a shitty thing to say. Come on! No real explanation? How does it being "slanted" keep them from doing it carefully?! Bah!
