Scrappy Doo from Scooby Doo

Colette Brunel (sp?) from Tales of Symphonia

I suspect voice acting is at work here; I watched Scooby Doo dubbed and Scrappy comes across as cute, not annoying like in the original English, and other people who watched it dubbed said they liked him just fine when I asked them.

Same for Colette Brunel: her cutscenes annoyed me until I opened the menu and turned off voice acting.

(Baten Kaitos appears to be by the same people or something, because the voice acting is annoying as fuck there AND it also has an option to turn it off. Somebody working there knows how awful the voice acting is and wants to spare the players that torture.)

Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia were both published by Namco, but they had different development teams and the dubs were totally different. The Tales of Symphonia dub was recorded in California with a cast of mostly well-known and loved voice actors. (Jennifer Hale, Tara Strong, Scott Menville, Crispin Freeman, etc.) The voice actors were actually included in some of the publicity for the game, I remember, because Nintendo actually fronted a lot of the money for the dub so that they could afford to get union actors and the like. (Notice that TOS credited the voice actors, and a lot of Namco-Bandai games since then only credit the Japanese, but not the English--it's because they're non-union, I think.)

Baten Kaitos was actually dubbed in Japan, using English-speaking actors that work in Japan and a Japanese director. So...yeeeeaaaaah. Those two dubs are WAY different in quality IMO, mostly because the director seemed to be pretty terrible in BK.

/voice actor nerd, and former mod on both the Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia forums, so I have a lot of opinions on this subject. Sorry!

I'm fairly certain it's because they are union actors, so if they were credited, they'd have to be paid higher wages.

I meant that the dub was non-union! Sorry, should've made that clearer.

That they were pros makes me feel bad about hating them.

I still thought they sucked and sounded awfully stiff. :V

It miiiight have been the direction they got? I think a lot of times voice actors get the blame for a bad dub when it has more to do with the script or them not having a great director. (Although there's a few members of the TOS cast that I never like in anything, so in those cases it's probably the actor, lol.)
