Shinji Ikari is my favorite character in Evangelion. I understand why not everyone likes him, but I was a pretty mopey teenager and I don't handle stress well so I can reeeeally relate to him and what he goes through, and I sorta like that the series has an atypical hero.

And jokes about him being creepy aside, I'm REALLY fond of Tom Nook in Animal Crossing. I think most of the jokes about hating him and him being evil are just jokes, but I'm never really sure.

I love Shinji for the same reason--people complain about his lack of agency and I can understand, but when I first saw Eva I was in high school, struggling and utterly failing to handle my own self-loathing and depression, and it was so important to see a protagonist try to overcome the same feelings and continuously fall short. It helped me realize I wasn't alone in my failures.

...I have a lot of feelings about Evangelion.

Bah, I'm sorry you felt that way as a teen. :( But I'm glad Shinji was around for you to have a character that doesn't just "get over" their depression, either.

Yay! I know I'm not the only one, but it's always good to run into other Shinji fans.

I love Shinji for much of the same reasons. I saw someone say that the reason they hated Shinji was because they saw too many of their own flaws in him, so I think it's one of those things where it depends on why you are watching NGE. People who say Shinji was too weak and they wouldn't be like that really annoy me. Also, I thought he was kind of adorable, negl.

I agree. I find him much more believable and, yes, likable, because of his so-called "cowardice." He's not badass, but he was never supposed to be.
