Three of those heroines (Mulan, Cinderella, and Belle) are not princesses by birth -- four if you consider the historical reality that Pocahontas wasn't technically a princess, but given the tenuous relation of that movie to historical anything that's a stretch. Cinderella and Belle become princesses by marriage. Mulan is not a princess at all.

...Actually, that's kind of odd. I had to correct this post twice while editing it, once when I found out that Disney's Rapunzel wasn't actually the child of a couple who couldn't afford to buy their own rampions, and again when I realized that the Beast was explicitly a prince and not just some rich lord guy. Huh.

I think I agree with you after all, they may need to lay off the princesses.

Pocahontas is never noted to be a princess in the film either.

Ugh I adore Jane. One of my absolute favorites. Out of all the missing ladies I think she's the one with the best argument to get in the line. Namely because the movie was super popular and did wonderfully at the box office! Plus you could argue that she's a bit of a royal, since Tarzan is 'king of the jungle.' But within a few years Disney kind of threw it under the bus? I wonder if it's because they didn't want to keep paying the Rice Burroughs estate their share of merchandise royalties. :(

They've actually had a lot of non-princesses, but those movies sadly don't tend to be as popular.

Uh...Mulan and Pocahontas are not princesses, technically. Cinderella, Belle, and Tiana were not born as princesses. Hell, Belle probably never becomes a "princess" because what exactly does Beast rule? He's just some rich guy, now.

As far as non-princesses: Esmeralda, Nani and Lilo, the girl from Bolt, Jane from Tarzan, and Meg. Going back farther, Duchess from The Aristocats, Maid Marian, Eva Gabor's mouse character, Perdy and Anita from 101 Dalmations, and they had a couple of heroines from their shorts. Oh, and Lady. Wendy. Alice. Probably more.
