I get where you're coming from, OP? For the longest time I did want him to have his own ending (he's just that cute), but the more I reread the storyline, the more I'm fine with the fact that he doesn't.
Tokino's there as the one bit of friendship Konoe has for a long time, and continues to be when his journey really gets going. I wish I were a bit more eloquent with this, but I think it's great that Konoe's able to have both a great friend and a love interest, since - like you said - the falling-for-the-best-friend route's pretty common, and this difference is one of many little things I love about the game.

All right, now that's out of my system. I suppose I kind of agree? I never really thought about it before, but now that you mention it, it does seem kind of odd that Tokino doesn't have his own route. I mean, Nitro+Chiral does a pretty good job of doing new, interesting things, but even they're pretty consistent with the Childhood Friend trope (Togainu no Chi-Keisuke, Dramatical Murder-Koujaku, maybe Sweet Pool-Makoto? I can't remember how long he was friends with Youji, and to be fair SP is just so different that maybe it can't really be compared to the others). In some ways, having a Tokino route would actually make more sense (four love interests, four devils), although that would require forging some link between Tokino and Razel (if we're keeping with there being a devil connection with each cat).
Though when all's said and done, I kind of agree with
tl;dr I agree that the game stands on its own just fine without a Tokino route (heck, it's my favorite visual novel), but I definitely don't blame you for being surprised that there isn't one.

Obviously not the way the story actually went, but the more I think about it, the more I'd love to see that as an AU. Though I actually don't care much for Razel, so I don't mind that he doesn't have his own big deal.
So psyched that there are other English-speaking Lamento fans! It definitely does not get enough love. <3

It's true that the others have more immediate relationships to their patrons, though I have trouble connecting Tokino to Razel's particular vice? He doesn't have a vengeful bone in his body by the looks of it - while early on Konoe does have moments when he's downright incensed and has to calm down, like after his first run-in with Firi (it's just digging through so much text that makes it tough to notice, I think). But the way the others do with their problems, he does his best to keep himself in check. Razel's end coming first means Konoe falls to his own weakness - getting fed up too easily, while with the other endings he gets to grow much more in between....
wow I'm really veering off the point of this secret, whoops.
(I have to admit, I do like Razel a good deal so sorry if my bias is screaming ;; Also thinking further, if anyone brings the eight of them together it's Leaks, but WOW I won't start - it's almost 3 am, hello )
If more can be found out about Tokino, though, I'd be glad to see where he'd fit, too (it's almost like HP sorting, down to the colors - )! He's just so... sweet and happy, it's hard to, sob.
