In all fairness, TV often plays characters as very gay but officially straight, in order to avoid the controversy. So a person could be forgiven for assuming "Ho hum, another 'totally straight, we aren't kidding' character," the same way you can watch a Murder Mystery and figure out who did it by picking up on what cliche they're using, while that obviously wouldn't work in real life.

P.S. That show always struck me as "We can do a Game of Thrones-type thing too! We're just going to make all our incest and gayness implied instead of canon." I'm glad they officially made him gay, though. I only saw the first season or so, but it was pretty obvious.

Borgias preceded GoT, didn't it? At least, I think the planning for it did, since the creative team included several members of the Tudors group. And several of the Tudors people who weren't moved over to Starz' Camelot. There was some resentment/frustration in Tudors fandom that there was absolutely no push to continue the show around Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, and it's from those discussions I'm getting this, so I could be wrong. We all kinda felt that, if they wanted to repeat Tudors' success, why not continue Tudors as well as give us new historical drama?

I didn't see beyond mid-point of Borgias season one (last ep I saw was 'The Moor'), but I got the decided impression that Michelotto was either gay or bi, and either way I thought he had a thing for Cesare.

I think they were both coming out about the same time and GoT was getting much more attention. But I could be wrong.

The Borigas: April 3rd, 2011
Game of Thrones: April 17th, 2011

So yeah, same year, same time, Game of Thrones got more press.

And yeah, The Borgias was described to me by a friend as "the awesome show that NO ONE is watching." It's really sad, because the Borgias is awesome but not getting nearly enough attention.
Personally I actually prefer it to Game of Thrones. I mean, Game of Thrones is badass and awesome and fun and all, but so much of the time I don't know half the character's names or allegiances or histories and get the feeling that instead of watching the show, I should be reading the books so I know what the fuck is going on. The Borgias explains the characters, politics, and religion in really comprehensible ways. And, y'know, murder and sex and all that jazz. And a scene of marital rape is played as disturbing and traumatic, not, y'know, something that is easily transitional to a loving relationship like with Dany and Khal Drogo on the show.
