14. [SPOILERS for the Borgias]

I guess I'm dumber than a sack of bricks then. I haven't see season two so I have no idea if the OP is right but I don't care... I don't see how recognising every character's sexuality is important?

Not "every character" - that character.

In all fairness, TV often plays characters as very gay but officially straight, in order to avoid the controversy. So a person could be forgiven for assuming "Ho hum, another 'totally straight, we aren't kidding' character," the same way you can watch a Murder Mystery and figure out who did it by picking up on what cliche they're using, while that obviously wouldn't work in real life.

P.S. That show always struck me as "We can do a Game of Thrones-type thing too! We're just going to make all our incest and gayness implied instead of canon." I'm glad they officially made him gay, though. I only saw the first season or so, but it was pretty obvious.

Borgias preceded GoT, didn't it? At least, I think the planning for it did, since the creative team included several members of the Tudors group. And several of the Tudors people who weren't moved over to Starz' Camelot. There was some resentment/frustration in Tudors fandom that there was absolutely no push to continue the show around Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, and it's from those discussions I'm getting this, so I could be wrong. We all kinda felt that, if they wanted to repeat Tudors' success, why not continue Tudors as well as give us new historical drama?

I didn't see beyond mid-point of Borgias season one (last ep I saw was 'The Moor'), but I got the decided impression that Michelotto was either gay or bi, and either way I thought he had a thing for Cesare.

I think they were both coming out about the same time and GoT was getting much more attention. But I could be wrong.

The Borigas: April 3rd, 2011
Game of Thrones: April 17th, 2011

So yeah, same year, same time, Game of Thrones got more press.

And yeah, The Borgias was described to me by a friend as "the awesome show that NO ONE is watching." It's really sad, because the Borgias is awesome but not getting nearly enough attention.
Personally I actually prefer it to Game of Thrones. I mean, Game of Thrones is badass and awesome and fun and all, but so much of the time I don't know half the character's names or allegiances or histories and get the feeling that instead of watching the show, I should be reading the books so I know what the fuck is going on. The Borgias explains the characters, politics, and religion in really comprehensible ways. And, y'know, murder and sex and all that jazz. And a scene of marital rape is played as disturbing and traumatic, not, y'know, something that is easily transitional to a loving relationship like with Dany and Khal Drogo on the show.

I basically spent the whole first season gaping at his scenes with Cesare and going all "there's no heterosexual explanation for any of this stuff"; I'm really glad that the showrunners did not chicken out of confirming that, nope, there indeed wasn't :)

"there's no heterosexual explanation for any of this stuff"

that's hilarious and accurate

(Anonymous) 2012-08-25 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahahhaa, I know right?

"Whip me, my lord ... harder ... harder my lord ... again!"

Now that was an awkward scene to watch with my mother, let me tell you.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you're going to conclude either that they're homophobic or that they're stupid, I don't think either is more judgmental.

I haven't seen the Borgias TV show, but I'm familiar with some of the historical background. I find it fascinating that in many ways they operated just like every other powerful family in their day, the difference is they didn't leave any descendants to spend the next several centuries sanitizing their images.

He always did have blistering chemistry with Cesare, but I can forgive people who didn't pick up on the subtext until it became text. Francois Arnaud has chemistry with everyone and everything. I did do a little "Shit, I'm smart" dance when I was right, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I just want to say that we need more Cesare/Micheletto, in canon and fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-24 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He always struck me as "ambiguously gay", as they say, but a lot of characters do and it's only rarely confirmed that they actually ARE gay. So I can see why a lot of people would assume that Micheletto being ambiguously gay in season 1 was just the usual queer-baiting, not an actual gay character.

My first encounter with the Borgias story was the Cantarella manga and in it, the mangaka teased with the idea of a Michelloto/Cesare pairing for many many chapters before flipping Michelloto like a pancake all of a sudden and making him fall head over heels for Cesare's sister. I think I never recovered from that so I wasn't too interested to check out the TV series (I did eventually check out the TV series and got bored out of my mind.)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-25 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I really WANTED him to be gay, I just didn't think the show was going to go for that. And then they DID, and I did a happy dance.

The set-up was there, but they could have easily written him as straight, or asexual even. He seems more interested in having a master than having sex. And remember we did see him having sex with a woman on the show. To get information and then murder her, of course, but still, he did have sex with a woman in Season 1 so I can see how some viewers would watch that and think "someone's got a case of the Not Gays."

Makes rewatching S1 so much more fun, though. All those scenes of Cesere grabbing him and shoving him against walls ... mmmmmmm ...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-25 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The scenes between Micheletto and Cesare in S1 and S2 [so far]...blisteringly hot. In my head they're shagging at every available opportunity, thank you very much. *g* Loved the scene with Cesare and Micheletto's mum, btw; Micheletto's "Oh Muuuuuuum!" embarrassed face was a joy. :¬)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-25 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Aahahhahahahaa, that was the best scene!

I just love how submissive Micheletto gets, especially around Cesare. Letting Cesare whip him, that hunched-shoulder thing he does when he walks, or how about that scene in season 1 where Cesare is angry at him and shoves him against a wall and holds a knife to his eye and snarls "blink once and you will be eyeless" and Micheletto calmly replies "And I would still serve you without one eye, your Eminence. Or without two."
GAH.
