Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments.

Granted, there are several factors in my defense, imo. I read the first 3 as a teenager. Even then, I didn't think there was anything special about her writing or anything; I preferred epic historical fantasy to supernatural YA romance, which was always nothing more than a guilty pleasure. I also didn't know about her plagiarizing debacle until like a month ago - heard about it here, in fact. So I have a lot of mixed feelings about her as a person now, since she sounds like a huge dick.

What I like(d) about her series, though, is that it has characters of mixed descent, gay and bisexual characters, characters who speak languages other than English, characters who are adopted, with siblings and without - basically, characters from many, if not all, walks of life. The side-characters are more interesting to me because of their variety than Clary and Jace.

Granted, after finding out all the crap I did, I feel ashamed to admit that I ever enjoyed/do sometimes enjoy reading her work. I just wish more series that 'got big' had variety regarding characters, since many, like Twilight, don't.

Please don't dog-pile me, F!S; I'll take better recs? ;n;

All by itself, The Mortal Instruments was interesting and broke away from some YA traditions that are still pretty rampant in even the much better-written books, like parents who actually join the adventure and have active drama of their own, a gay main character who wasn't slated to die tragically and even landed himself a guy, side characters who had plenty of shit to do besides sit around and worry about the main couple, and like you said, the variety of people. Also I liked that it knew how to both acknowledge and embrace absurdity. Flying demonic motorcycles...yeaaaaahhh.

It needed to stop after the first three books, though. The last two have had such totally manufactured and ridiculous drama that I had to give up, despite Magnus. It took a lot to make me give up Magnus.
