Fandom things you like that everyone hates (or guilty pleasures)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-08-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Idk, the comments are kind of bumming me out today, so let's have a fun thread where we divulge our guilty pleasures in fandom. Be it a particular character, trope, pairing, theme, comm, etc.

No shame. Just sweet, sweet release.

So, I'll admit it. I love woobie!Loki (and whump!Loki). Yeah, lots of people write and read these types of fics, but general consensus is that woobie!Loki is the worst thing ever.

I love this so much more than the post from yesterday where everyone talked about the things they hate that everybody else likes. So depressing!

I like Twilight a lot, and lots of other things that tons of people think are sexist. Dunno why, cause I have a serious problem with sexism. Guilty pleasure I guess?

I used to love Twilight, both before and after I realized how problematic it is. Now I can't take it seriously anymore. /csb

No rationalizing! Just ahh, release. You like this thing and there you go. That's all there is too it.

There are a few people on this comm that legit like Twilight. Tbh, I probably would have liked it too if I'd been the right age. Not that older fans are wrong for liking it, but I know I would have been in the right mindset for it at a certain age. The love triangle dynamics would have particularily appealed to me.

I like the first book a lot. It's pretty unoffensive and indulgent romantic fantasy fulfillment to me, before it veers off the deep end in the second book.

Hey, woobie!Loki can be vair compelling if done well. :-)

For me... Draco/Ginny. And babyfic.

And if I may mention non-fandom stuff, then "Say Yes to the Dress," and "What Not to Wear".

My sister loves Say Yes to the Dress and so I've seen several seasons worth of episodes. In fact, it's on as I type.

I... well I have more opinions on wedding dresses (and right after I typed that my entire family broke out into commentary over the dress the bride's dad picked.)

Oh, this is a very on the nose thread. I'm watching Eclipse with one of my roommates right now. I am definitely enjoying some of it. Oh, Taylor Lautner, you are so beautiful.

Excessive UST and pining.

. . .Derpy Hooves. I know, I know, I'm a terrible person.

Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments.

Granted, there are several factors in my defense, imo. I read the first 3 as a teenager. Even then, I didn't think there was anything special about her writing or anything; I preferred epic historical fantasy to supernatural YA romance, which was always nothing more than a guilty pleasure. I also didn't know about her plagiarizing debacle until like a month ago - heard about it here, in fact. So I have a lot of mixed feelings about her as a person now, since she sounds like a huge dick.

What I like(d) about her series, though, is that it has characters of mixed descent, gay and bisexual characters, characters who speak languages other than English, characters who are adopted, with siblings and without - basically, characters from many, if not all, walks of life. The side-characters are more interesting to me because of their variety than Clary and Jace.

Granted, after finding out all the crap I did, I feel ashamed to admit that I ever enjoyed/do sometimes enjoy reading her work. I just wish more series that 'got big' had variety regarding characters, since many, like Twilight, don't.

Please don't dog-pile me, F!S; I'll take better recs? ;n;

Hmm. The second X-Files movie, the later seasons of Stargate SG-1, and the Stargate Atlantis episode Whispers. Also, Jonas Quinn.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Even Willie and Short Round.

The Star Wars Expanded Universe Bantam-era non-trilogy novels. Yes, even The Crystal Star. It's bizarro but I like it.

Star Trek Enterprise! I'VE GOT FAITH OF THE HEART, OK

OCs, man, OCs (fancharacters, whatever). I love to see well done, or sometimes just fun OCs people come up with. Also I have a bunch to whom I'm really attached but what I find fun is making them work in the world of the canon, so I think it's endearing when other people work them like that too. I don't even mind canon/oc romances.

But everyone else is like RAARGH, so.

I so love me some woobie!Loki.

Also... kidfic. Like where one or both halves of the pairing has a kid and they have to balance the growing romance and the kid. It's adorable.

Mpreg. I hate kids and am honestly kind of horrified by the idea of pregnancy, so I have no idea why I like it. Maybe just because I like weird things and it's so out there?

I thought there were more, but I can't think of them right now.

I will admit that when I first read Twilight I liked it. (Although, I was 15 at the time, and it filled exactly what I wanted to read and hadn't been able to find - a vampire romance novel.)

But then I realized what a douchebag Edward was and the love turned to hate, and then indifference.

Re: Fandom things you like that everyone hates (or guilty pleasures)

[personal profile] terabient 2012-08-25 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I admit the main reason I don't like woobie!Loki is because Thor is usually a dick in those kinds of fics and that makes me sadface. I am all over woobie!Loki fics that have Thor being a sickeningly sweet brother.

For anime fandoms, I have a weakness for cutesy, moe-type characters. Like, it isn't something I consciously seek out, I just relate to characters who get overwhelmed easily and freak out. And I don't always recognize the fetishization of helplessness when it's happening. ._.

I love AUs. Not the type where characters are just thrown into a bakery for domestic fluff, but crazy and inventive ones. I like seeing the old and new elements carefully blended together - for example, a character who could summon a monster now has a spaceship named after that monster, in a sci-fi AU, or a secret club is now a secret coven of vampires, in a supernatural AU. Also fantasy AUs where one character is turned into a dragon or a mermaid or something. Bring it on please.

Sadly, fics like that are nonexistent in most of my fandoms.

Draco/Hermione. I finally realized why, too: Draco learns to see beyond the surface of Hermione and loves her for who she is. If a racist prick like Draco can learn that...it gives me hope and makes me happy.

Also the pretty. Not gonna lie. :D

This is always my answer but VISUAL NOVELS. I love them to death, but they're definitely a guilty pleasure for me. I justify them by explaining that I play them in Japanese, thus giving me foreign language practice, buuuut I've gotten to the skill level where that might not really fly as an excuse anymore. x.x

I don't know about the 'that everyone else hates' but I kind of like fics that are over-the-top violent. AUs (sensible ones) are fun too, if done right.

I like characters that are happy and kind and angst-free. It's so relieving since angst usually fills up most of the fandom, and sometimes the show too.

I also like pairing the main character from series with the girl he like(eg, I ship Tsuna/Kyoko from Reborn!)
I know those kinds of series make girls into "prizes" to be won by the boys, but it's just kinda cute to see a character you've invested in be able to be with the person he likes. And it's a simple romance and not dramatic like the way fandom likes it, but sometimes simple is nice.

On the vein of Ginny/anything, I happen to like Harry/Ginny. At least, I liked the idea of Harry/Ginny before HPB, and interpretations/deviations that were better than the books.

I have, unfortunately, not read any fics featuring them since the end of the series so please don't ask me to give you fandom examples justifying my likeness of them. I'll just embarrass myself in the process. xD;
