Re: Fandom things you like that everyone hates (or guilty pleasures)

I love AUs. Not the type where characters are just thrown into a bakery for domestic fluff, but crazy and inventive ones. I like seeing the old and new elements carefully blended together - for example, a character who could summon a monster now has a spaceship named after that monster, in a sci-fi AU, or a secret club is now a secret coven of vampires, in a supernatural AU. Also fantasy AUs where one character is turned into a dragon or a mermaid or something. Bring it on please.

Sadly, fics like that are nonexistent in most of my fandoms.

I love drastic AUs! Especially with canon carefully shifted to fit the new world instead of discarded entirely. I was lucky enough to adopt one fandom that has tons of well-written ones. I think the weirdest was where one character was a volcano and the other was a whirlwind in human forms, and they had this doomed romance before it was only a matter of time before they succumbed to their elements entirely.

. . .what fandom is this? Me gusta drastic AU, but I wasn't aware this was a guilty pleasure.

Inception, Arthur/Eames. And yeah, I didn't think it was, either, but I've seen wank before over whether or not drastic AUs are just original fic with canon names slapped on.

That's so silly! If it's enjoyable, why does it matter? If it's creative enough, I enjoy it.

It has to be weird for me though. I'm not a fan of like bakery or grocery store or ceo AU's.

I love AUs like that, too. That's why I love one particular author. She writes amazing AUs that can get really out there, but still work!

This is exactly why I have one of the numerous Avengers bakery AUs bookmarked. AUs are my fanfic drug.

I really like Naruto AUs myself, because canon (post-timeskip anyway) is so depressing that I like the escape once in a while. Plus, I enjoy interpretation of characters without their ninja-related hangups in AU settings. I think they can be quite fascinating.

Oh man, I love AUs, both modern stuff and the really inventive stuff.

...I actually ended up writing a high school AU (and will be writing a follow-up college AU) for my main fandom, and dammit, it was fun! Got a half-plotted sci fi AU for the same fandom (but oh my god, I need a better name for the Master Sword than just the 'Master Blaster', because not even I can take that seriously!)... more of a real-world Pokemon AU (Pokemon are still Pokemon, but it's more of a... realistic take, I guess? Not so much trainer journeys by unaccompanied ten-year-olds and all)... vague ideas for a still-fantasy-but-not-as-pseudo-medieval-as-the-original AU...

Anyway. I love AUs >.>

I used to hate AUs (both the "bakery" types and the more extreme ones) because I thought, "If I wanted everything to be completely different, I'd just go read completely different original fiction." I probably just had the bad luck to come across a lot of badly-written AUs that changed the characters too much and not only put them in a new setting but took away most of the familiar story elements. All that was left was a fantasy involving characters with the same names and faces but nothing else that drew me to the canon in the first place.

I've discovered much better AU fics then and have since changed my mind. I love it when the characters are kept in-character and especially love it when the author really things about how the characters would behave in the new setting and how that setting would affect them, including coming up with reasons for how the characters still ended up more or less the same as in canon even if they are living under very different situations and may even have completely different backgrounds.
