I genuinely believe that a huge chunk of the people in fandom who like loli/shota are identifying with the kid rather than the kid being the target of attraction, and are using it to revise and re-live the sexual awakenings they missed in their real life childhoods. A case of arrested development. They don't feel like they are adults who have figured out life or sex, so they're comfortable being represented by an icon for whom not understanding life/sex is normal. i.e., a sparkly anime kid.

People identifying with the kid in the scenario was mentioned upthread, but this angle comes up surprisingly often in these debates.

This. I kinda like shota/loli-esque things (just the fluffy stuff though, NOT porn) because I have this major thing for older men. Also, I'm very inexperienced sexually. Maybe because I find the men of my own age very irritating and not appealing at all but yet I have enough common sense to not go pursuing a man who's 20 years older than me. So, in a way, I'm dealing with these issues by sometimes viewing shota/loli and I am definitely identifying with the kid character. However, I immediately get freaked out if they are too sexual and the kid is portrayed to be in distress. That goes hand in hand with my own inexperience. I'm kinda afraid of sex. I fantasize about older men and being cuddled and kept safe by them but I don't want sex. Go figure.
