brightblueink: Madoka looking surprised and holding a cat (Fragile Heart)

I actually met him in person through a friend and he was a really nice and interesting guy. (Even if I'm a Christian--although I'm not sure if he realized that or not.) I do feel sorta like I'm walking on eggshells in the community, although every time I've actually commented there they've been very nice, as well.

Really, though, if you don't feel comfortable there, then you don't feel comfortable, and there's nothing wrong with that? Different communities have different "feels" and cultures to them, and there's no reason you should have to try to force yourself to fit into a place that you don't actually feel comfortable in. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you or the community, sometimes that's just how it is. I hope you find someplace you CAN feel comfortable, OP.

Unfortunately, most tattoos are terrible life decisions.

Fortunately, nondouchy people often make terrible life decisions, and tattoos are far from the worst. Who is this guy?

He's actually really nice! But his blog kinda goes overboard trying to make everyone feel "safe". Not a bad thing, mind you, but for some of us it gets a little annoying.

Still, his blog, his rules. If I don't like it I'll go read somehting else.

Who/what community is this?

Has anyone successfully made amends after offending the people on that site? Because, much as I hate the attitude that pops up in predictable ways, I miss having a fandom to talk episodes with where I'm neither far behind nor is it all about fic and ships. But I've been trying to apologize for a week and have only gotten silence. And sadly emailing Mark is about all I can do, since I can't comment directly to the site.

Do yourself a favor and don't look back. This is the sort of place where whatever you did will keep coming back and mentioned in unrelated places.

OP: Mark Watches/Mark Reads

(Anonymous) 2012-08-27 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, was under the impression he had become a BNF. Kinda glad he apparently hasn't.

Thanks. Yeah, best not to assume with secrets and just label them.

I'm aware of his existence but that's about it. Not really interested in the whole premise, but also the weird drama I've heard about him through friends that are involved pretty much assures I'll stay far away.

What is it that he does that is offensive?

The tattoo could have been more refined, but I've got to give it to people who don't care for stepping on eggs around christians.

Not OP

Essentially, if you don't fit his idea of what a marginalized person is, your opinion doesn't matter and you can fuck off and die.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a whole load of them in Syria right now. Why not go over there and let them know how pleased you are that they're taking the opportunity of the civil war to cleanse their land of the native Christians? No need to show the barest respect for what they consider sacred, right?

Well, his heart is in the right place and he probably is a really nice guy, but I do find a lot of the attitude on his site and blog off-putting.

Hope you find somewhere else you can feel comfortable in, OP.

Eh. After the Great Wank Over the Word "Crazy", I just read it for the analysis and skip all the social justice-warrioring.

BTW, I like Mark, and I think most people on the site have good intentions. But they can get too overwhelming sometimes.

Yup, same here.

ETA: Forgot to say that I'm willing to overlook some of the negative aspects of the site because of the wonders it's done for my .gif collection. Hell yes.

As a mod, I can confirm that people report comments for the most RIDICULOUS things.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Accept, they refuse to let you analyze if your analysis doesn't fit their prescribed view of what is right. I mean, you can try to have a conversation with somebody about Dark Willow, but as soon as you say you thought it was a great storyline and the Evil Lesbian trope doesn't really apply, you're immediately persona non grata and *~erasing them~* because you speak up when you don't share an opinion.

[identity profile] hyena-frog.livejournal.com 2012-08-28 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
OT sorry, but I was wondering if anyone knows why there aren't any comments on his site anymore? There used to be hundred of comments per entry on both of his sites but now there's usually none.

I was taken by surprise by the lack of comments for his Korra commentary. I thought it would be popular, since lots of people were waiting for it. At most, there are only two comments per entry! What's up with that?

[personal profile] erinptah 2012-08-28 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
The Korra finale has 169 comments from where I'm sitting, and the other entries for the series are all getting similar numbers. Maybe something's up with your browser?

What's wrong with sXe?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who is straight edge and with several tattoos saying so, I'm curious why you cringe when you see his? The cross with the slash through it is a little bit more understandable.

OP

I used to like him so much when he was still in the middle of reviewing the Twilight series but now it's gotten to the point where it hurt my soul that he read Good Omens (though maybe it wasn't so bad)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I love markdoesstuff. I think it's positively affected the way I think.

But I totally thought that particular tattoo was a hickey for an embarrassingly long time.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
None of that crap bothers me.

I think it helps, however, that I don't give a shit about any of the Mark Watches stuff. It sounds like a lot of the drama comes from that, and it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. The Mark Reads stuff is often at least interesting, and often very entertaining, when it's something that I already enjoy and which is meaty enough to allow for discussion - LotR and Sandman have both been pretty great IMO. There's a pretty great combination of visceral enjoyment of a property that you know well and interesting in-depth analysis of it.

It also helps that I spend most of my time online in places that are kind of brutal. Being somewhere that's overly sensitive and polite is a nice change for me. It's like a vacation. I can follow whatever norms are in place, even if they seem arbitrary to me. No skin off my back.

So, you know, maybe Mark is terrible or something. I don't know. I guess my engagement is hands-off enough that it doesn't really matter. Finally, my inherent slackerness and lack of commitment pays off.
