OP, I swear there are sane fans (I am one, I would know. :P). The trick is to find people you like/get along with who happen to like FiM, not people who dedicate 100% of their internet time to it and have "liking FiM/being a brony" as their identity.

Like others said, there are groups like this in the big fandoms, and in this case they're so vocal it feels like it's all the fans, but I promise you it's not.

I would suggest avoiding sites like Equestria Daily or just checking them up from time to time and just the tags for topics you're interested in (like, news, for example, and avoiding the comments or other "aren't we so cool" smug commentary.

Ugh..this is the WORST. Few things I cant stand more than BNF's exploiting their perceived privilege in their fandom (ie cutting in line at SDCC to buy the D#rpyHooves exclusive, or cutting in line for autographs @ Everfree).
