That's not unusual in fiction, unfortunately.

Blood Family is Important. Chosen Family (a group of adults coming together) is Important. Adopted families get the short end of the stick.

...what? i really have never caught any inkling of that sentiment. maybe i just wasn't paying attention?

Well, it's equally possible I wasn't paying attention. I just remember miscellaneous themes about blood ties, and I remember miscellaneous themes about people picking their families, and I don't remember much about adoptive families except maybe in some kids' books. This is a totally scientific sample of Stuff I Remember Just Now.

diff anon, but...

there's a lot of carefully placed "she's not his real mother" or "she can't really love him" comments throughout the series, sometimes outright stated like that from people who should know better (like the child psych, or Mary). and, I've noticed that they're usually directly in reference to him being adopted, not that Regina is corrupt.
