I get this icky feeling that the writer(s) hate adoption and fetishize blood family.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-27 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not unusual in fiction, unfortunately.

Blood Family is Important. Chosen Family (a group of adults coming together) is Important. Adopted families get the short end of the stick.

...what? i really have never caught any inkling of that sentiment. maybe i just wasn't paying attention?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's equally possible I wasn't paying attention. I just remember miscellaneous themes about blood ties, and I remember miscellaneous themes about people picking their families, and I don't remember much about adoptive families except maybe in some kids' books. This is a totally scientific sample of Stuff I Remember Just Now.

diff anon, but...

there's a lot of carefully placed "she's not his real mother" or "she can't really love him" comments throughout the series, sometimes outright stated like that from people who should know better (like the child psych, or Mary). and, I've noticed that they're usually directly in reference to him being adopted, not that Regina is corrupt.

I don't know if they hate it per se, but I do wish they wouldn't continue portraying it in such a negative light. Honestly if it was JUST Regina I wouldn't mind because yes she is crazy (and evil) and yes Henry is better off with Emma.

But they bring it up with other characters as well, like Hansel and Gretel. And they're continually having Emma talk about how terrible it was for her (which maybe it was, but still). August's adoption related situation turned out horribly as well.

I like the show but it is one aspect that makes me uncomfortable.

Well, I thought the point with Hansel and Gretel was that Emma thought it would be a bad thing, and given her history, she was projecting. Also, August was with Emma, so if Emma's adoption history was shitty, it stands to reason that August's wasn't necessarily better, but YMMV. :)

Well the kids were just as appalled at it. They kind of went out of their way to make adoption seem like the WORST THING EVER (oh we'll separate them, oh they'll never be happy). And in the end dad "did the right thing" by taking them in.

No I meant that August's history was also terrible. August could have ended up in a better situation, but the show chose not to do that. I just think that the show needs to have more positive portrayals of adoption instead of just negative ones.

I don't know, I guess I'd be afraid of being separated from my brothers too, since that's all I've ever heard about in fiction, on the news (children separated by foster families grow up identical!) etc. If they've read the same thing I have, I wouldn't be surprised.

That's true. But didn't August leave the orphanage? I thought he had run away from it, and that's why his story didn't have happy adoption- he ran away instead of being adopted. It might have been nice if that was the case, but (spoilers), would whatever magic that kept him human as long as he was 'unselfish' see being adopted (if Emma wasn't) as 'selfishness'? Because he's turning into wood because of his selfishness at running away- would that still hold true if he 'let' himself be adopted, if Emma wasn't... Hm...

Yeah; August ran away from the orphanage and what he agreed to do (to protect Emma) which is part of why things sucked for them.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if I was remembering it properly. ^^;

Oh no I have no problem with Hansel and Gretal being horrified by the idea of being separated. It's the narrative I'm talking about there, which chose to make it a potential issue, not the character reaction.

Well he wasn't at an orphanage. He was in a foster home? Again though, narrative choices. I'm not questioning what August did. I'm questioning what the writers of the story have continually done.

Oh, that makes sense. :)

I don't actually remember. >_>;

I disagree. Some of the worst parents on the show are blood relatives; Regina's mother Cora and Jiminy's parents are truly awful. I think Jiminy's episode even criticizes that, in a way, because he feels stuck because of their bond as relatives, and then he becomes adoptive father (in a way) of Gepetto.
