Yeah, I completely agree.

That's my biggest problem with the series; Regina. I expected to love her -- and was also super-excited because I saw so much shipping potential in Emma/Regina. But what she did to the Huntsman/Graham... I just can't get over it.

The actress is gorgeous beyond words imo. Guh.

That said, I hate the character so damn much, and I agree that her actions are not only often despicable, but baffling. She doesn't even try to hide her evil side from Emma, which to me doesn't come off as her being confident, it just makes her look stupid.

Still catching up on this show (little over midway through so far), and I think every character is a wasted character. That's probably just me hate-watching the show, but it's hard for me to find a reason why I should care or watch other than "it's pretty, and I hope there's some more Emma/Regina UST in the next episode :B".

so, yeah, agreed.

Yeah, I watch an episode and feel like "well, that was ok, I guess, but ... I'd rather be reading Fables."
Then I go buy another volume of Fables.

Mmmmmm Fables yes

Everyone should go read that comic. [eta]if deconstruction and fun is a thing they like anyways

I get this icky feeling that the writer(s) hate adoption and fetishize blood family.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-27 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not unusual in fiction, unfortunately.

Blood Family is Important. Chosen Family (a group of adults coming together) is Important. Adopted families get the short end of the stick.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
...what? i really have never caught any inkling of that sentiment. maybe i just wasn't paying attention?

I don't know if they hate it per se, but I do wish they wouldn't continue portraying it in such a negative light. Honestly if it was JUST Regina I wouldn't mind because yes she is crazy (and evil) and yes Henry is better off with Emma.

But they bring it up with other characters as well, like Hansel and Gretel. And they're continually having Emma talk about how terrible it was for her (which maybe it was, but still). August's adoption related situation turned out horribly as well.

I like the show but it is one aspect that makes me uncomfortable.

I disagree. Some of the worst parents on the show are blood relatives; Regina's mother Cora and Jiminy's parents are truly awful. I think Jiminy's episode even criticizes that, in a way, because he feels stuck because of their bond as relatives, and then he becomes adoptive father (in a way) of Gepetto.

I am totally with you! I so wanted to love this show! I gave it a good try, I really did. But I just couldn't take it any longer. And the deciding moment was what she did to the Sheriff/Huntsman. No - just no.

I gave it up. Makes me sad, but that's the way it goes.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-27 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt the opposite way very early in the series, yes the audience knew Regina was evil but her outside actions to Emma were mostly that of a concerned mother, so I was actually rather confused when Emma was all about making Regina her enemy- considering she had no rights or reason to.

Emma didn't know Regina was really an evil queen, so actually Emma was really in the wrong to try to butt into the life of someone who adopted the son she gave up.

By the way I am not excusing Regina at all and I do think she hyper over reacted to Emma's presence, but their early rivalry just felt dumb all around because they had no reason to take the desperate actions they each took.

THIS. Emma kept threatening Regina with taking away the child. But Emma had no legal rights to do that - IRL, she probably would've got laughed out of court. I know it's TV, and exaggeration etc., but yeah, it all just felt so forced.

Seconding this.

Also Henry's overall actions. I mean, he feels wary of the woman who raised him, but wants to be with the lady who gave him up with no actual conflicting feelings about it? :/

Honestly, I thought that was the point of Regina. She spent quite some time in the fairy tale world able to control others with her magic, or with other means, and she stopped hiding it, she was the Evil Queen, and no one could stop her, and then in Storybrooke, she has everyone under her thumb still- even if they don't realize it. She doesn't thing she has to be subtle, she's never really had to be before, and it's worked, so why start with Emma?

...And we all know how that works out for her.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
MTE!

Evil is often its own undoing, right? Regina is so certain that she has the upper hand and that she'll win that she doesn't really bother to hide it, especially when Emma was basically another alpha female coming into Regina's territory and openly challenging her. Regina probably relishes the opportunity to show off her power every chance she gets.

SPOILERS OF FIRST SEASON
Hence why she goes all to pieces when Emma finally breaks the spell but then gets giddy when she feels the magic coming back.

Agreed.

Bad writing.

Pretty much sums up the entire show.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. If she hadn't have reacted with so much hostility toward Emma at the end of the Pilot, Emma would have left and that would have been the end of it (until Henry ran off again. Nothing stops that kid).

Lol well she's the Evil Queen. She's not exactly mentally balanced.

I find her frustrating, but more in a 'villain who comes across more obnoxious than scary' way. She works better in the fairytale world, but in Storybrooke she's just irritating.

Lana Parilla's scenery chewing doesn't help. Again that works in the over the top fantasy world with the big hats and the leather pants, but not in Storybrooke.

Uuuugh, Regina. She annoys the hell out of me. Such inconsistent writing.

It doesn't help that when she tries to bully/threaten Emma, the expression she receives says quite blatantly, "Lady, you are full of crap."

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's mainly Regina being unable to get out of her own perspective. If someone sat *her* calmly down to a dinner and tried to reason with her, it would never work, so she can't see how that tactic would be effective with someone else.
