i like the idea of a high quality archive but the problem is that they take so much work. it's pretty feasible within a single fandom but can you imagine what it would take to do that for something like ao3?

and i mean, it's not elitist to want good fic to be accessible. like, i don't care if there is bad fic on ao3. i just don't want to have to plough through all of it. the kudos system is supposed to help, i just wish people would actually use it. i leave kudos only on stories that i think are really good. if it's just kind of 'that was barely entertaining enough to finish', then i don't leave kudos. maybe there should be a rating system? but that takes more thought and then people are going to be even less likely to use it.
anyway, i used the kudos system to find fics in the sherlock fandom and felt it was pretty useful. not perfect, but good enough.
