I agree. And yet I keep checking the Avengers archive every day anyway, hoping to find a few gems.

I honestly do not understand why this surprises/pisses off ANYONE. did you really think AO3 was your personal little safe haven where it was impossible for nothing you personally dislike to get in?

Sorry to break it to you but there have always been bad fics on AO3. Get over yourself. You do not have the right to good fic. Hell you don't have a right to fic at all. You want nothing but 'good fic' join one of those elitist fic comms that only let 'good' writers join.

I immediately thought of That fic in the fandom I'm in, and promptly went to check if that was the one you were commenting on, but the dates are different.

Still, believe me, I feel exactly the same way.

It's a free archive. You're going to get your money's worth. At least this one's without the restrictions and issues you get with ff.net.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-27 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. The good old days when there was no badfic and the stories gushed rainbows and sparkles out of the screen, curing ailments and saving puppies.

I miss those days.

Tell me about it. At this point i start to prefer ffnet, because i know the site won't crash on me - like it happens at least 2-3 times a day on AO3. Due to the increased trash there i see almost no difference to ffnet anymore. Shame that.

Get over it OP.

What you consider bad others may enjoy. It's not your secret little website of things that only you like

(Anonymous) 2012-08-27 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I feel so out of the loop when it comes to AO3. But that's probably because I dwell in small fandoms and therefore make do with ff.net. When I first checked to see if AO3 had a list with one of them on it, the list of fandoms didn't show any of mine.

Um...I'm curious as what fic(s) the secret is referring to. I have no clue.

Still, ever heard "One man's trash is another man's treasure"? Don't get me wrong, I've hated stories that other people adored, but...you know what I'm going to do about that? A whole lot of nothing, because it doesn't matter.

And the more fics and users the site gets, the more likely less of the fic will meet your expectations. That happens everywhere.

You and Sturgeon's Law need to go on a nice, long date.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
i like the idea of a high quality archive but the problem is that they take so much work. it's pretty feasible within a single fandom but can you imagine what it would take to do that for something like ao3?

and i mean, it's not elitist to want good fic to be accessible. like, i don't care if there is bad fic on ao3. i just don't want to have to plough through all of it. the kudos system is supposed to help, i just wish people would actually use it. i leave kudos only on stories that i think are really good. if it's just kind of 'that was barely entertaining enough to finish', then i don't leave kudos. maybe there should be a rating system? but that takes more thought and then people are going to be even less likely to use it.
anyway, i used the kudos system to find fics in the sherlock fandom and felt it was pretty useful. not perfect, but good enough.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I judge the hell out of anyone who thinks that they have the right to judge something as subjective as quality, just sayin'.

Now I think I'm going to go flood AO3 with more fic, because fuck you.

I have no sympathy for these secrets.

1) Having to hunt for fanfiction you like.

2) Trusting the subjective opinions of other people who rec fic or run elitist archives.

Those are the two choices. Welcome to fandom.

I'm really not quite sure what else people expected to happen. AO3 is an automated multi-fandom archive that actively promotes itself as being open to all kinds of fic. You're bound to start seeing a huge variation in quality as its popularity increases. You want a high goodfic to badfic ratio you have to a) set limits on who can post, b) set limits on what can be posted, and/or c) promote the archive as a place for high quality fic.

For me personally the goodfic to badfic ratio has always seemed pretty much equivocal for AO3 and ff.net though. Ff.net certainly has no shortage of badly spelt Mary Sues, but a trip to AO3 often involves wading through a pile of generic OOC kink meme fills to find something where the characters are recognisably themselves.

I'm not so concerned about the threat to quality (though I hope they've got decent moderators on hand) as I am about AO3 handling the workload. I think it's third to only ffdotnet and adultfanfictiondotnet among fanfiction-specialty sites, and they don't have any kind of profit system outside of donations. I hope they can figure out a more long term solution beyond shutting down parts of the site.

1) There was always plenty of shit on AO3, trust me. I only read off rec lists now, but when I've gone looking for rare fandoms on there I hit the back button at least 80% of the time.

2)It kind of makes me happy that there's more crap on there now. I hate websites trying to make $$ off of the creativity of fandom, though I admittedly don't know shit about ff.net, and even if the AO3 is still working through its issues at least we know they're not judging us and trying to package us for advertisers... I really hope they can make it work!

What did you expect? The more popular it becomes, the more bad writers flock to it. Why do you think FFN has turned into The Pit? It's the largest single fanfic archive online.

One person's trash is another's treasure. Personally, I like the variety of tropes.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hate to break it to you - but it already *was*. There was already bad fic on there, and the longer it's around the more it's probably going to pick up. That's just life - particularly with sites that don't have monitored membership - and even if it really *was* a site you had to be invited into by a current member, you'd still have a fair chance of some less than 'quality' writers showing up.
