Re: Your unsettling movies...
(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 01:52 am (UTC)(link)funny games did nothing for me. tbh i came out of that movie just feeling mildly amused by the villains. i mean, i completely get what the director was going for with that film, only the message definitely wasn't meant for me. so i was just kind of bored throughout.
Re: Your unsettling movies...
I watched the German version of Funny Games before the US remake and I think the villains are better-explained and more frightening in the original, though I do think that some of the decisions the writer/director makes - i.e., the remote control - are kind of jarring. They either knock you out of the film completely or scare you even more in a kind of 'holy crap, there's no way to stop these guys!!' It's a shame you didn't enjoy it, though!
Re: Your unsettling movies...
I think a lot of the problem is that I was expecting something different. I think I was expecting something more along the lines of A Clockwork Orange.
I did find Funny Games unsettling, so maybe it "succeeded" in that aspect. But it was the sort of unsettling that frustrated me and made me hyper-critical of the story. And to be honest, I also found it a bit boring. I get the intention of a lot of the scenes, and I think the way some of the scenes were drawn out could have increased the tension. But the film felt longer than it was and watching it on TV, it was just too easy to change the channel for a few minutes when things got slow.
