The Strangers concept is terrifying (and then you get real-life cases of things like this happening...) It's definitely one of those movies that stops you feeling safe in your own home, and that's just the worst feeling.

I watched the German version of Funny Games before the US remake and I think the villains are better-explained and more frightening in the original, though I do think that some of the decisions the writer/director makes - i.e., the remote control - are kind of jarring. They either knock you out of the film completely or scare you even more in a kind of 'holy crap, there's no way to stop these guys!!' It's a shame you didn't enjoy it, though!
