I feel like comparing fanfic to original fiction, in terms of quality, is a false dichotomy. I find the attitude that fanfic is mainly crap just by nature of being fanfic annoying, honestly.

What people miss is that with fanfic, you see a broad range of quality. It's very easy for anyone to post what they write. With original fiction, many people are really only exposed to stuff that that has been vetted by publishers. If you read beginners' work, go on Fictionpress, or look at a lot of self-published novels, you'll see a pretty broad range of quality in original fiction, too.

I have read a lot of fanfic that I thought was better than some original fiction. Even traditionally published original fiction. "Fanfic" and "original fiction" aren't two distinct groups in terms of quality.

This. I couldn't have worded it better.
