I'm not supposed to think that fanfiction > published fiction

One word: Twilight

More words: 50 Shades of Grey

I rest my case.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
yeah tbh as bad as twilight is i don't think i've ever read any fanfic that's actually better. (but feel free to give me recs to prove me wrong if you'd like :D)

50 shades doesn't count bc it *was* fanfic. i will never understand how or why it was published. and sorry to be repetitive, but as bad as twilight is, it doesn't even *compare* to how bad 50 shades is.

Some people hold the "all fanfiction is trash" mentality. You are obviously one of them if you've never found fanfiction superior to Twilight, but that's okay. You don't have to like fanfiction to be in fandom. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
but...that's not the case at all. i love fanfiction, and i've read a ton of it because i like it so much. but fanfic is extremely indulgent, and while i would say twilight is to a large extent as well, it's not quite on the same level. but i do have to admit that my frame of reference is limited to pairing fic. i don't touch gen. so there might be something in that category that has more literary merit than what i have come across.

For real? I'm having trouble naming a fanfic more indulgent than Twilight. Granted, I wield the backbutton like Loki wields his crazy, so there probably are plenty of compu-global-hyper-mega-indulgent stories out there, whereas I've read tonnes of fic superior in plot (loooooow bar), writing quality (low bar) and characterisation (Twilight has what now?).

Off the top of my head, here's one: Ornithologies (http://archiveofourown.org/works/463718/chapters/800168), by Tahariel.

I wouldn't even know where to start reccing you. All I can think is that you either have some really bad fandoms or you haven't had time to read a lot of fic, or maybe both.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
then why bother replying with a cop-out?
darkmanifest: (Default)

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2012-08-28 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
...because I thought "I've never read fanfiction better than Twilight" was a cop out to begin with? I've read health pamphlets better than Twilight.

Better in terms of what? The quality of the writing, the story, or both? I think the best comparison would be to look at Twilight fanfic or fanfic that's of a similar genre. I haven't read Twilight, but I've read a lot of fics that I would wager are "better." But I don't know if it's fair to compare two stories that are vastly different.

50 Shades of Gray becoming published fiction caused a riff in the fabric of the literature-logic continuum making it possible to believe that fanfiction can be better than published fiction.

Harlequin Romance Novels made it possible for me to believe that. (I've never been able to finish one. Though I understand they vary widely in quality, so...)

Ahaha, Harlequin Romance Novels. The super old ones have charmy, kitchy covers, but I've never been able to read one. I feel like an intruder, like "I shouldn't be reading this" without knowing why I shouldn't. Found one on the bus earlier this year titled (I'm not making this up) The Spaniard's Virgin Housekeeper. I don't even have the courage to open it. Not sure what to do with it, actually. Probably end up leaving it for someone else to find.

One day, I hope to find an abandoned HRN riddled with snarky annotations from the previous reader.

That is one of the most amazing titles I have ever heard.

I like the series, but I didn't go in thinking it was going to be the most amazing piece of m/m romance fiction that had ever come down the pike. It's just a mystery novel written by a couple of former fanfic writers, churned out by a file-them-serial-numbers-off publisher. (I actually didn't know a damn thing about serial numbers and m/m fic when I read it; if I had, my expectations likely would have been lowered even further before reading...and I probably would have ended up liking it even more than I do.)

Anyway, I think it's well done in comparison with most similar titles out there. And compared to some, it's practically Pulitzer Prize-worthy. But it's not going to be winning any major, prestigious awards for its astonishing prose, no.

Looks like AR has actually switched publishers? Anybody know the story on that? Did she leave in protest after the TJ Klune fuss? I know at least one other DSP author who did.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I should probably point out that I have no idea if this series started out as fanfic at all. I assume it did not.

UGH. That book sucked so bad. I was really disappointed. It read exactly like a shitty RP log.

There's much better gay fiction out there, OP. I'm totally in love with the Infected Series by Andrea Speed, if you haven't read that yet.

OP here

Thanks for the rec! It looks like an interesting twist on the usual PI novel.

Lol this book was so boring. I have no idea why people praise it so much.

You're not supposed to think it, but a lot of times it's the truth.

I feel like comparing fanfic to original fiction, in terms of quality, is a false dichotomy. I find the attitude that fanfic is mainly crap just by nature of being fanfic annoying, honestly.

What people miss is that with fanfic, you see a broad range of quality. It's very easy for anyone to post what they write. With original fiction, many people are really only exposed to stuff that that has been vetted by publishers. If you read beginners' work, go on Fictionpress, or look at a lot of self-published novels, you'll see a pretty broad range of quality in original fiction, too.

I have read a lot of fanfic that I thought was better than some original fiction. Even traditionally published original fiction. "Fanfic" and "original fiction" aren't two distinct groups in terms of quality.

This. I couldn't have worded it better.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Because they were BNFs in fandom and probably just filed the serial numbers off one of their old fics and most of their fans bought it? I know they've done it for other fics of their because I read all of their fics back in my LotR RPS days.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I see. The author apparently has left DSP, well-known for its completely aboveboard practices, and, bam, there's a secret bashing the series, and bam, someone shows up in the comments to rec a different DSP series.

Nah, that's not fishy at all.

[personal profile] nicheled 2012-08-29 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
To each his/her own, I guess. :/

I've really enjoyed the series and the character development in each book (admittedly, the latest book isn't as good, as Ty seems a little too far out of character). Like someone else said above, it's far better than much of the stuff out there in the M/M original fiction world.

Yeah, in the first book, the killer became obvious partway through, but I still enjoyed the action. But then, for me, it became about the characters after only a few chapters. I fell in love with Ty and Zane and all of their inherent flaws.

I love a good mystery, but I read the books for Ty and Zane. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the mystery aspect, but after so many downright bad mystery novels, my expectations there are somewhat low. I just thoroughly enjoy the main characters – even more so as the series goes on.

And as for the inconsistencies, that's really just Ty and Zane and all of their craziness (that becomes clear as the series goes on). It's not that they're inconsistent so much as it is that they're extremely flawed and stubborn. They'll both make you want to smack them over the head, but you'll also fall in love with them, flaws and all.

I'd suggest reading the next one or two before you ultimately make up your mind. You may completely disagree, but I think they're worth it. Just my two cents. :)
