One word: Twilight
More words: 50 Shades of Grey
I rest my case.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)50 shades doesn't count bc it *was* fanfic. i will never understand how or why it was published. and sorry to be repetitive, but as bad as twilight is, it doesn't even *compare* to how bad 50 shades is.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 10:16 am (UTC)(link)For real? I'm having trouble naming a fanfic more indulgent than Twilight. Granted, I wield the backbutton like Loki wields his crazy, so there probably are plenty of compu-global-hyper-mega-indulgent stories out there, whereas I've read tonnes of fic superior in plot (loooooow bar), writing quality (low bar) and characterisation (Twilight has what now?).
Off the top of my head, here's one: Ornithologies (http://archiveofourown.org/works/463718/chapters/800168), by Tahariel.

One day, I hope to find an abandoned HRN riddled with snarky annotations from the previous reader.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-27 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)Anyway, I think it's well done in comparison with most similar titles out there. And compared to some, it's practically Pulitzer Prize-worthy. But it's not going to be winning any major, prestigious awards for its astonishing prose, no.
Looks like AR has actually switched publishers? Anybody know the story on that? Did she leave in protest after the TJ Klune fuss? I know at least one other DSP author who did.

There's much better gay fiction out there, OP. I'm totally in love with the Infected Series by Andrea Speed, if you haven't read that yet.

What people miss is that with fanfic, you see a broad range of quality. It's very easy for anyone to post what they write. With original fiction, many people are really only exposed to stuff that that has been vetted by publishers. If you read beginners' work, go on Fictionpress, or look at a lot of self-published novels, you'll see a pretty broad range of quality in original fiction, too.
I have read a lot of fanfic that I thought was better than some original fiction. Even traditionally published original fiction. "Fanfic" and "original fiction" aren't two distinct groups in terms of quality.

I've really enjoyed the series and the character development in each book (admittedly, the latest book isn't as good, as Ty seems a little too far out of character). Like someone else said above, it's far better than much of the stuff out there in the M/M original fiction world.
Yeah, in the first book, the killer became obvious partway through, but I still enjoyed the action. But then, for me, it became about the characters after only a few chapters. I fell in love with Ty and Zane and all of their inherent flaws.
I love a good mystery, but I read the books for Ty and Zane. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the mystery aspect, but after so many downright bad mystery novels, my expectations there are somewhat low. I just thoroughly enjoy the main characters – even more so as the series goes on.
And as for the inconsistencies, that's really just Ty and Zane and all of their craziness (that becomes clear as the series goes on). It's not that they're inconsistent so much as it is that they're extremely flawed and stubborn. They'll both make you want to smack them over the head, but you'll also fall in love with them, flaws and all.
I'd suggest reading the next one or two before you ultimately make up your mind. You may completely disagree, but I think they're worth it. Just my two cents. :)
