I'm not supposed to think that fanfiction > published fiction

One word: Twilight

yeah tbh as bad as twilight is i don't think i've ever read any fanfic that's actually better. (but feel free to give me recs to prove me wrong if you'd like :D)

50 shades doesn't count bc it *was* fanfic. i will never understand how or why it was published. and sorry to be repetitive, but as bad as twilight is, it doesn't even *compare* to how bad 50 shades is.

Some people hold the "all fanfiction is trash" mentality. You are obviously one of them if you've never found fanfiction superior to Twilight, but that's okay. You don't have to like fanfiction to be in fandom. :)

but...that's not the case at all. i love fanfiction, and i've read a ton of it because i like it so much. but fanfic is extremely indulgent, and while i would say twilight is to a large extent as well, it's not quite on the same level. but i do have to admit that my frame of reference is limited to pairing fic. i don't touch gen. so there might be something in that category that has more literary merit than what i have come across.

For real? I'm having trouble naming a fanfic more indulgent than Twilight. Granted, I wield the backbutton like Loki wields his crazy, so there probably are plenty of compu-global-hyper-mega-indulgent stories out there, whereas I've read tonnes of fic superior in plot (loooooow bar), writing quality (low bar) and characterisation (Twilight has what now?).

I wouldn't even know where to start reccing you. All I can think is that you either have some really bad fandoms or you haven't had time to read a lot of fic, or maybe both.

...because I thought "I've never read fanfiction better than Twilight" was a cop out to begin with? I've read health pamphlets better than Twilight.

Better in terms of what? The quality of the writing, the story, or both? I think the best comparison would be to look at Twilight fanfic or fanfic that's of a similar genre. I haven't read Twilight, but I've read a lot of fics that I would wager are "better." But I don't know if it's fair to compare two stories that are vastly different.
