I've really enjoyed the series and the character development in each book (admittedly, the latest book isn't as good, as Ty seems a little too far out of character). Like someone else said above, it's far better than much of the stuff out there in the M/M original fiction world.
Yeah, in the first book, the killer became obvious partway through, but I still enjoyed the action. But then, for me, it became about the characters after only a few chapters. I fell in love with Ty and Zane and all of their inherent flaws.
I love a good mystery, but I read the books for Ty and Zane. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the mystery aspect, but after so many downright bad mystery novels, my expectations there are somewhat low. I just thoroughly enjoy the main characters – even more so as the series goes on.
And as for the inconsistencies, that's really just Ty and Zane and all of their craziness (that becomes clear as the series goes on). It's not that they're inconsistent so much as it is that they're extremely flawed and stubborn. They'll both make you want to smack them over the head, but you'll also fall in love with them, flaws and all.
I'd suggest reading the next one or two before you ultimately make up your mind. You may completely disagree, but I think they're worth it. Just my two cents. :)
