Well, no. Because you say you know better.

Even so, you can't help your feelings--confront them, if you can, and deal with them. Certainly don't treat her poorly for it.

I don't know, it might not mean what you think it means. My old psychology teacher once gave me the advice to write while drunk, and Ernest Hemingway did the same thing (well, not to me personally, but you get what I mean).

I see the "I wrote this drunk" thing less as "I can write even when I'm impaired" and more as how the writer gets out of her own way. Try not to take it too hard.

Do you know how many famous writers over the centuries wrote drunk? It's practically a club.

Nothing to be jealous about. Some writers are better at writing sober and some are better drunk. She's a drunk writer.

For some people, that's their muse though. For all you know she couldn't do it sober.

+1'ing all the comments about some people writing better drunk.

but also reassuring you that no, it's perfectly normal to feel upset when you think someone is so much better than you at something without even trying (whether that's actually true or not).

however, if you want to get better, you need to practise. you admitted you're 17 and immature, which gives you plenty of time to improve. even if she does have a natural aptitude for it, you can build up those skills with hard work. it sucks to feel like someone else is effortlessly better than you, but remember that they had to practise too to get as good as they are.

Just thinking out loud here, but it could be false modesty. For example maybe she wrote it drunk and then edited the hell out of it sober but didn't say that part. Could be she wrote it drunk and it was actually really difficult. (I can't even write an IM message when I'm drunk...) Many writers don't talk about how it was difficult for them to write something even if it was.

I wouldn't take it that seriously.

Also, she may have been trying to put herself down. Sometimes that doesn't translate well - the implication being that it was an accident that the fic was good, not skill on her part.

Dude, it's true! I write my best stuff (original fiction, not fanfiction)when I am drunk or stoned. True fact. I call it the Hemingway Principle.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-28 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if she wrote it drunk, she probably edited it sober.

*shrug* Perfectly normal to be jealous. You'll get over it eventually.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Alcohol does lower inhibitions, so I can see why it might help, because it might turn off the inner editor, and the mental block of "everything I write sucks." I assume she goes back and polishes and edits while sober, but she gets everything down while drunk.

What I want to know is how so many people manage to write decent stuff while drunk. If I get drunk, anything I write is basically whaargarble.

I'm also a sleepy drunk, though, so maybe that has something to do with it.
saiika_von_maou: (Default)

[personal profile] saiika_von_maou 2012-08-29 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, some writers write much better when their inhibitions are lowered. For example, I write all of my best stories at four in the morning, when I'm half-asleep. Why? Because I'm not thinking too hard, and just letting the ideas flow by themselves.

Try writing drunk/half-asleep yourself and see what happens. You might be surprised.

(Someone probably suggested this in the thread already. If so, consider it reinforced, if not, then whee.)

Now, she didn't say how drunk she was. There are varying degrees. More importantly, it's called "liquid courage" for a reason. Some people have to drink to shut up their inner critic and get their story out. I know an artist who does great stuff, but if she tries to draw without being high, all she'll do is say "I suck so much".

Being out of sorts before creating is the only way some people can give themselves a break from mental self abuse because if they don't like what they did, there's the option of saying "L-O-L Whatever, I was hopped up, it's funny =P".

Maybe next time you have a weekend and a bad cold, try taking some drowsy cold medicine and seeing what you write? If you're trying, you might have given yourself performance anxiety.

I'm sure before it became so second nature to her that she could produce admirable prose while being intoxicated she busted her ass practicing. It's not something you're born with. Everyone has to learn at some point, but once you practice enough you may reach a level that you could do it in your sleep. Don't hate on her because of it, work hard to become that good. She's proof that it's possible.

It's very telling that you started out as jealous of her, even at first. That's not healthy nor does it demonstrate a great deal of maturity.

Good luck sorting through this issue, OP. Just remember that jealousy is a waste. I've been there, done that, and still struggle from time to time, but it is a waste of energy.

And, of course, don't let it discourage you from pursuing your own writing in your own way.

Being jealous just makes you human, but you need to tell yourself to shut up and focus on your own writing. Write every day, learn how to listen to feedback (and when not to listen to it, not all advice is good and in the end you're in charge of the story) and only compare yourself to yourself.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Some writers are like that. I come up with my best ideas either at 4 AM or when I'm fighting off severe sleep deprivation. (Or when I'm eating dorm cafeteria mac 'n' cheese, but I have no explanation for that one.)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
If it helps, there's that quote from Henri Toulouse Lautrec, 'One should never meet a man whose work one admires. The man is always so much less than the work.'

I can ONLY write while drunk. To the point where I have actually been tipsy for exams that required essay writing. Otherwise it's like my brain shuts down and words don't come out.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
wow are you serious

thinking she isn't even trying

hating her for being talented when her inhibitions are lowered

the only thing that saves this secret is your age. i wasn't that stupid (about this particular issue) at your age, but lots of people are, so it's a valid excuse for not knowing how things work. it is not, however, a valid excuse for being that mean-spirited.

legit advice from a former high-school fanfic author: don't take other people's success to heart. the day will come when you can experiment with writing tipsy. there's a time and a place for everything and it's called college.

in the mean time, write while tired. write with music on. just write. most of it will be shit, but it will be educational shit. lack of experience, immaturity, and seventeenness all go away with effort and the passage of time.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
oh my god get over it

she didn't do anything wrong and, holy shit, she was also probably joking. yes, you are being petty, and for stupidass reasons too. stop it.
