(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 01:37 am (UTC)(link)"READ AND LEARN"?
Okay, okay, I'm going to pretend you're making a joke and just accidentally deleted a line out of your comment so that it doesn't look like a joke, because the idea of someone in fandom being arrogant and smug enough to actually use the phrase "read and learn" without being tongue-in-cheek is too insulting for my brain to handle.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 09:17 am (UTC)(link)But a passing comment on that first article which I did just read in breathless anticipation of learning: The mob in DKR is not made up of the regular citizens of Gotham. It's the League of Shadows plus the convicts who have been unjustly held without parole under the Dent Act.
I'm not going to say that the film was cutting or astute political insight. But you don't have to squint very hard to see it as a story about Bane co-opting the rhetoric of the Occupy movments. Eileen Jones says the reason we don't see the crowd reactions is because the audience are a stand in for the crowd and Bane is addressing us. I'd counter that the reason we don't see the crowd in the scene before the prison break is because Bane is faking the popular mandate. The audience isn't being put in the shoes of 'the people' but of the watching world whom Bane is manipulating through the media. We're seeing what they're being fed.
That also makes a lot more sense in the context of the Gothamites we saw in TDK. Remember what happened the last time a villain gave a bomb to members of the public with the power to destroy each other at will? Nobody pushed the trigger. If the Gothamites were really in charge of their city there'd be cause for hope, because it turns out Gothamites are mostly basically decent. That would be false hope - that thing that Bane loves to go on about so much. Because Gordon is right from the start. The power is never in the hands of the people. It's in the hands of the secret representative of a murderous international organisation who has hidden herself among the upper echelons of Gotham's business elite.
To call the film a straightforward vilification of public revolt misses all the nuance of the thing. And it's not like it has a huge amount of nuance to begin with. It's a Batman movie.

And I say that as a fan. But, seriously, is there any movie (or series, in the cast of Batman) of his where the hero DOESN'T somehow inadvertently kill the love of his life ?

I have only seen Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and I thought Rachel was (or at least was supposed to be) fairly strong and independent. I mean, in BB she had a sense of justice, studied hard to become prosecutor, wanted to get Falcone in prison even though it clearly put her life in danger, confronted Dr. Crane at his asylum (and almost got herself killed while doing this) and in the end Batman even entrusted her with the antidote to give to Gordon so he wouldn't be affected by the toxin. She doesn't even get with Bruce in the end, because she realizes that he's changed and what she really wants is the old Bruce back - which, given that they both still have feelings for each other, I think really shows that she's not just there to be the mindless love interest. And yeah, Batman does save her 2-3 times in the whole movie, but I thought overall she wasn't that bad as other female leads in superhero movies who are literally just there to a) always get saved by the hero (and later fall hopelessly in love with him), or b) to be eye candy for male audiences.
I can see why TDK would be sexist though... Rachel doesn't really do anything important in that film and even worse, Nolan kills her off... which always kind of bothered me a bit. I can sort of understand that it was needed for the character of Two-Face, but I still wonder if it was really necessary.
Just out of curiosity, is Catwoman in TDKR a strong female character? I haven't seen TDKR yet, but the actress that plays Catwoman kind of puts me off... No offense to the actress herself or her fans, I just... can't see Anne Hathaway being Catwoman, that's all.
