Whilst I haven't seen this behaviour or the movie (in fact, I've seen a whole bunch of critics and fans saying "Ooh it addresses weighty issues of our time! Transcends genre! Intellectual!) I'm going to guess that you're pissed because they have a particular political position on it you don't really share, and you think they should acknowledge that your/other readings of it are "valid". Sorry, that's not how political positions work. I'm also going to guess that their "acting like they're more politically aware" is in response to "shut up relax omg I liked it okay it's just a movie!"

tl;dr you think all lefties are holier-than-thou.

that is stupid. if the aim of the whole movie was to be conservative propaganda they should've had less batman and explosions and more mandated vaginal probes. seriously though where are people even getting this?

If there is some kind of political message in this film it's lost in the large vacuum of plot holes.

I've seen intelligent people on both sides-- whether you like it for the turn-off-your-brain action flick that it is, or hate it for the poor execution and flaws. Liking this film is no permanent reflection of your intelligence.

The more I think about this movie (I finally saw it two days ago) the more I dislike it. Not because of political views or whatever, but I wanted Batman to be the goddamned Batman, with skills! And plans! And brains, damnit!

Instead he just walked straight at his problems, relying entirely on the plane or brute force to get him out of a situation - and the one time he tried to be sneaky, he fucked it up. That is not Batman. That's just fucking disappointing.

(Sorry. I've had nowhere else to say this. I mean, as a superhero action movie, it was fine. Explosions, fight scenes, impossible 'science' - cool beans. But I guess after BB and DK I got sold this idea that he would have a plan beyond 'everybody run into the line of fire of guys with machine guns' and, well, there was none. He wasn't even forming plans in reaction to events, like he did with the train thing in BB. Grrrrrrrr. This is why I should always, always walk into a theatre expecting disappointment - the one time I let myself think 'Oh, it'll be just as good as the last two', I'm left with a big fat NOPE.)

Um, maybe you care because people like that are annoying? Not everything is a social commentary, for starters; and even if it is some giant metaphorical political statement, why should everyone interpret it that way? It's another case of "you shouldn't like what I don't like" disguised as some kind of ridiculous moral outrage. You have every right to be annoyed.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Although I can't say I identify with this because I have no relationship to the Batman fandom, I completely echo the sentiment about ways in which to read a text.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Um, yeah, DKR was undeniably conservative in nature. There's really no disputing that. The overall themes were INCREDIBLY pro-conservative and nasty as fuck. Also racist and sexist, but w/e, I know nobody here cares about that. Still. I don't get how you could have MISSED it.

[personal profile] iggy 2012-08-29 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
It totally is a way conservative film though, imo. I've never been a fan of the Nolan films, so when this became really obvious in the third one it didn't exactly break my heart, but I've always gotten sort of a conservative read from them even before this one (my dislike of the first two films is based on the imo poor writing though, not that).

...And then when I found out that one of the writers is also in charge of writing that gross new Call of Duty game where the villain is the ~leader of the 99%~ I was like no wonder.

I don't care if someone likes it, but I'm actually kind of glad that some people are noticing it instead of it just getting worshipped by 99% of the population like the first two films.

And no I don't think it's conservative 'propaganda.' There's a difference between something being written by someone with a conservative mindset and outright propaganda.

THANK YOU. I know this movie has flaws, and I'm a liberal, but I still enjoyed this movie. Sorry, world.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
... how are you going to argue that it's NOT a political movie? Don't the Tale of Two Cities parallels alone indicate that pretty strongly? I'm not trying to be self-righteous here, I just thought the political element was pretty textual. If that doesn't matter to you, that's cool. I agree that it's kind of odious to pretend that liking or not liking a movie is a political test that you have to pass. Shit, people still watch Leni Riefenstahl propaganda films. I just don't see how you can say the movie's not politically oriented.

I think the deeper problem is that like all Nolan movies it's absurdly over-long and over-complicated. I'm just curious.

Yeah, I think there was always gonna be backlash just for the sake of it, just because it's the third one and the first two were so good. There were definitely some weird political issues there and I'm not entirely sure what it was trying to say sometimes, but there's also a lot of hating-it-for-the-sake-of-it going on.

What I don't get and have never gotten is why people supposedly can't like something that goes against their political leanings, or appreciate the point of view of those who made it, etc. I haven't seen TDKR yet, so I don't know if it'll bother me or not, but... I love some books and stories that I disagree strongly with.

One of my favorite books is Atlas Shrugged. Do I agree with it? Oh God no. But I think it makes an interesting case for what it's trying to say, and I love detailed dystopias, and I can identify with some of the characters a surprising amount so... I like it a lot.

According to some people this probably makes me a sociopath. Wevvvvz.

Wait... people who don't like it think they're... more politically aware? Smarter?

That's just stupid.

I hate the movie because I think it was a poorly told story. Nothing more. Yeah, maybe there was symbolism in there but it was such a clusterfuck I'm not sure what I was supposed to get.

Whatever.

...wasn't part of the point of the movie that Bane was manipulating the pissed off lower classes of the film to serve his own murderous agenda? It the point was that the chaos wasn't a "natural" result of social revolution but forced, what with the presence of a nuclear warhead, the military barricade, freed prisoners, Bane's own men causing trouble...even the spontaneous executions were being spearheaded by another villain from a previous movie.

I kind of got that it was very much a commentary on modern socioeconomic controversies, but I am not really seeing how it was a "love letter to conservatism". o.O Maybe it was supporting certain aspects of conservative ideology, but it was doing some of that for liberal ideology, too. Like, it kinda made corporations as a concept look rather bad, and it did seem to make a point that even if you are going through similar experiences - i.e. suddenly losing all your money at once - it happens differently based on whether you were rich or poor to start with, which is very antithetical to conservative ideology. Not to mention showing what happens when people with financial power - like Bruce - start getting even slightly irresponsible (the charity can no longer support the foster home and the phased-out kids were losing their lives over it). The movie plays to both sides and basically just highlights the flaws of both perspectives, rather than showing anything really good about either one.

Honestly, I thought "liberalism vs conservatism" was more of a side plot than anything else, just a vehicle for the main, if stupid, conflict with Ra's and Miranda and all the inner-demon bullshit.
