I started playing Mass Effect for the Garrus romance too, (also, seconding that desire for an alien dating sim. Fucking aliens are hot as hell, man) but I started at 1 because I wanted the whole context and found that the series as a whole is really great. I got so attached to all the characters and improved my skills on the actual gameplay part quite a bit (went from dying constantly in 1 to being a fucking boss in the middle of 3 right now)

I'd encourage you to try the other games if you have a chance, maybe do a "proper" playthrough one day. Stuff you could have done in 1 can have a big impact in both of the sequels. (like I'm pretty sure starting at 2 means Wrex isn't around, which makes me sad forever because he's fucking awesome)

The romance with Garrus has more punch that way too, imo. In 2 it's pretty eh beyond his cute awkwardness but in 3 it's really fucking good and really well-written.

Can't shoot for shit either, I'm more a swords person. I got into ME because I liked Dragon Age, but I must say I prefer the romance in DA.

I love roaming around in Mako though. It makes me feel badass. And the universe is wonderful.

At least look up the Garrus romance scenes of ME3 on YouTube. They're a lot better than the ones in ME2 (in my opinion).

I'm all for people doing what they like but... you are doing it wrong.

No really, you are doing it wrong. You'll have a horrible ending if you keep playing like this.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
He's got a point. People you get and stuff you do will affect your ending, focusing exclusively on one character means you'll probably see some bad shit happen in the last mission.

this is what i think whenever i see people say they didn't bother recruiting anybody, you're missing out on most of the game, why even bother playing it? :/

Also you want to romance Garrus but not get to know him through all the games? He exists in ME1 too y'know (at least you can't kill him there), with his own mission and his own cute little dialogues.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not just focusing on the best character in the game, I just haven't finished getting everyone yet. I'm getting everyones quests finished after I get them all, I just mainly play it for the alien romance.

Hey! I just started playing too! I'm even playing the Garrus romance. Well, this playthrough. I have five I'm importing from the first game. All of them are different. Interestingly, I started playing Mass Effect due to overhearing Garrus fangirls talk about him. It piqued my interest so I looked into Mass Effect and Bioware. I'm glad I did.

I suck too but I've only died once so far. I'm thinking I shouldn't have started with my sentinel due my beginner's idiocy. I'm learning though and I do find the fighting fun. I'm gonna learn and move up through the difficulties.

I hate to break it to you but I heard the Garrus romance in ME3 was awesome. So you may want to play it and then just stop before the ending. Granted, I don't actually know what goes on. I'm staying away from spoilers. However, I heard Garrus fans were very happy.

Of course I can only wonder why you bought the game if only for Garrus. Why not just watch the romance scenes on youtube if that's the only part you're interested in?

The Garrus romance wasn't the only reason I bought the game, but getting the option to bang some non-human looking aliens was a plus since that's something I don't see much. Then I ended up falling for Tali and made a male Shep just to date her, then Jacob became my favorite LI in ME2, or the ones I did wanna bang weren't optional. Still love Garrus, though.

Haha, you're probably not gonna like your ending, or what may happen to Garrus as a result, though.

Honestly, just go and youtube the ME3 Garrus romance.

Mass Effect 3 is mediocre/merely okay even if you ignore the ending because it's seriously uneven in quality, with lots of great moments and writing mixed with lots godawful writing and storytelling as well as a lot of ham-fisted melodrama.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
OP could have done this with Garrus's ME2 romance also, instead of buying the game, too.

Before I played Mass Effect Garrus was the only thing I knew about the series and admittedly, a romance with him was pretty much the only reason I bought them. After playing ME1 I started ME2 with every intention of romancing Garrus buuuut then Thane strolled in like the smooth operator that he is and that was that.

I got around to romancing Garrus in my second playthrough, though and I just started a third one with mshep.

Anyone else play the Leviathan DLC? That was freakin' awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Leviathan was freakin' awesome too. And hey, in the context of this secret and Garrus' romance, worrywart!Garrus is too cute. Although I feel bad for making him worry.

"I wish there was a dating sim with aliens."

Be careful what you wish for...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
OP, with the way your playthrough is going, there's no way you'll get a good ending in ME2 OR 3. Otherwise I'd say play ME3 for the Garrus romance if nothing else. Despite the bad endings, there's a lot I liked about it. Even if the writing was iffy in many, many places.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
You're doing it wrong. Plus, you're missing out on the additional romance in ME3.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Why not just play The Sims and put alien skins on them if you don't want to play a real game?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I would love a sci-fi-based dating sim game with aliens/humans to date

before this secret I had no idea I wanted something like this

but shit, I do

so bad

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
If you play enough side missions and whatnot, with the free DLC for expanding the ending, ME3's ending isn't that bad. I mean, there are some things that could make more sense, but I would definitely not say its bad anymore.

I think people just got pissy about the way it was to begin with because it was kind of confusing to figure out just what you were looking at, but now that it's been expanded, it works.

Admittedly not the very best of endings, but it's acceptable now.
And they're right. Romancing Garrus is so much better in 3 than it is in 2.

Though admittedly nothing topped him getting that cheap wine and that cheesy music on your date in 2. Best thing ever.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, wouldn't it be great if EA made another of those cell phone games a dating sim game?

It should have all the different species though. Hanar, Elcor, Volus, Batarian, Vorcha, etc. in addition to main species like Turian, Krogan, Asari, etc.

It could be an otome game! But instead of each guy as a trope, each guy is a different species. Collect your harem. Yes.

+1
