Yes - I really disliked Ender and everyone's special treatment of him.

The only thing I remember and like about the first book was him talking to Valentine on the raft and him and that other kid fighting in the showers. (Didn't Ender end up killing that kid? Let me look that up.)

Ender in Exile was a lot more enjoyable.

Yeah, he ended up killing him, although I think they hid it from Ender so he wouldn't have a breakdown or something. That was a well-written and visceral scene but...it didn't make me like the kid more.

I vaguely recall liking Bean (come to think of it, he's the only character whose name I can remember besides Ender, although I suck at names so that's not unusual to me), but not enough to read any of the books where Bean's the MC or something. I was just that put off of the series by the first book.

Oddly enough, the only one of the Ender-related books I've actually read was 'Ender's Shadow', not realizing at the time that it was basically 'Ender's Game' told through Bean's point of view. Afterwards, I never really had any interest in reading the original versions starring Ender, because frankly I thought that Bean was a pretty fascinating character and didn't give a damn about Ender. I also never read any of the following books starring Bean, because for some reason I was put off by the idea of reading about him as an adult...

However, I did think Ender's Shadow was a pretty good book, and I've re-read it several times.

But, well, Orson Scott Card being Orson Scott Card, I'm not really inclined to recommend him, even if I did enjoy that bit of his writing?

Yeeeeaaaah I have to admit that recently I haven't been feeling too guilty about not liking Card's work because he's Card. My friend actually tried to recommend I read that book after Ender's Game since I admitted I liked Bean much better, but I think at that point I was...well, being an immature teenager and refusing to read another rec from him until he read one of mine, hahaha.

I might try that book, though. If I check it out from the library it's not like I'll be giving money directly to him....
