I report to court for jury duty tomorrow...
(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:09 am (UTC)(link)/the only citizen in America who wants to be on a jury, wat
Re: I report to court for jury duty tomorrow...
I always felt the same way actually. Because hell if I was ever on trial I'd want someone like me on the jury, and it's part of your civil duty as a good citizen.
I'm pretty sure I never got called up because of my family background though, and work a job now which automatically disbars me so it's never going to happen.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:28 am (UTC)(link)I had jury duty for the first time a couple years ago... I got to jury selection for an assault with a deadly weapon trial and even got called up to answer questions for voir dire. I basically sat up there and listened to the lawyers question everybody. Then the judge asked me if I would say the defendant was innocent or guilty if the case was decided now, and I said innocent because you're innocent until proven guilty, and she was surprised. And then they said that I could go and I wasn't on the jury. Which is a shame because I kinda wanted to do it, I was home from school for the summer and kind of at loose ends.
I guess the prosecuting attorneys don't like having liberal college student types on the jury or something, I don't know. Anyway, that's my jury duty story, good luck to you!

Re: I report to court for jury duty tomorrow...
(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:55 am (UTC)(link)It really depends on the case, but from what I've gathered (and there are approximately one zillion lawyers among my family and close acquaintances, so I'm not just making this up), it's not uncommon for one side or the other to want a jury of easy manipulated, sheeplike people who aren't particularly discerning thinkers and wouldn't understand Twelve Angry Men if you bashed them over the head with a CliffNotes version.
I love Twelve Angry Men, so I predict that I'm less than likely to make it onto a jury. ^^;

Good luck with jury duty, I hope you enjoy it as much as you think you will!
Re: I report to court for jury duty tomorrow...
(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 12:59 am (UTC)(link)This time I've been assigned to a smaller court, and it's near where I went to high school, so even if I just wind up sitting in the waiting room all day, at least it'll be a more pleasant experience than last time...?
My brother got on a jury once, too. I'm still jealous of him, even if his case was a really ridiculous one that shouldn't even have gotten to court, it was so stupid and petty. But now I have decided that rather than being jealous of him, the fact that he got on a jury shall give me hope!

I wouldn't mind being on a jury at least once. I'd rather not get called now with school and everything, but I don't hate the idea of serving eventually. But I have a suspicion that I wouldn't be selected. I'm too liberal and too critical of the justice system.
Re: I report to court for jury duty tomorrow...
(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:06 am (UTC)(link)The first time I got called to jury duty, I was a college student in the middle of term. Unfortunately, I went to school 3,000 miles away. I had to call and request a deferral. That was fun. "I'd like to get my jury service deferred, please." "You must have a good reason to get your jury service deferred. Why do you want a deferral?" "Because I'm a college student going to school 3,000 miles away. I'll be back in town mid-June." "...Okay, that's a legitimate reason. Your jury service has been deferred. Have a good day." And then I had a completely fruitless jury service that summer. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 02:04 am (UTC)(link)My father is a fundamentalist Christian and takes his Bible to read while waiting. The one time he actually passed the voir dire, the judge booted him. He's never sat on a jury.
I wish you the best of luck and hope you have a great experience!
Re: I report to court for jury duty tomorrow...
I was selected once, and while I wouldn't want to repeat the experience I'm glad that I was able to do it once.
