Re: Characters fandom hates that you feel protective of?

WTF. It's also obviously done as a cute thing for contrast, come on, it's Japan! Also, wow they would have hated my entire high school theater class. We took classes in the very rat-infested basement, and every time a rodent would come out 90% of the class would run to the other side of the room and the other ten percent of us had to wait for the mouse to leave. Every time I was on the point of feeling scornful, I would remind myself that I'd be up on the desk myself if it was a water bug instead of a mouse.

First playthrough! I'm in the Tower of Spirits again, getting the map for the Sand Realm.

Ah, I'm guessing the slash fandom inevitability? The exact reason I have not ventured into Link/Groose territory although the concept intrigues me.

The weirdest bit to me is how many of the Navi haters like Tatl from MM- I admittedly didn't get very far into MM before hiding under my bed, but I wanted to hurt Tatl way more than I ever did Navi.

...I would not have enjoyed that class XD;; Oh dear.

Ooh, good luck! You're getting in to the meaty bits now!

Yeah, unfortunately. I am trying to actively change that, but it's so widespread that it's kind of... hard to do so. I just try to avoid any Link/Sheik that includes Zelda-bashing. Fastest way to make me click the back button, seriously. (And aww, come and join us! Most of the Link/Groose fans I've seen still like Zelda - and I really, really like them as an OT3, too. Happily, I haven't seen much Zelda-bashing from any of the major alternate Link ships - most just consider the relationship between Link and Zelda to be one of best friends. Which is an interp I'm fine with, honestly, even if I do ship them as well. There are outliers, of course, but those are present anywhere.)

Tatl is very... well, tsundere XD;; Navi is more enthusiastic and... nurturing? I guess? Okay, that's not quite the right word, but there's more of a perception that she looks after Link, as opposed to Tatl, who's more of a foil for him to bounce off. People might resent the percieved babying.

Heh, yeah, any class in any basement is going to have special little things like that- if it's not rodent infestations, it's rainwater leaks or ventilation problems!

I've been quite enjoying it so far- given, I've enjoyed every Zelda game I've ever played, and the closest I got to not having fun was...and I know this is a bit of a sacred cow for some people...A Link to the Past.

I could believe the Skyward Sword fans are better- most of the bashing I've seen has been from the Ghirahim fans who take everything too seriously (as opposed to the Ghirahim fans that actually like him because he's a silly character). Do you have any communities you recommend?

I feel like some gamers get so caught up in their involvement as an experienced Zelda player that they forget that Link's supposed to be a fairly sheltered kid as of the beginning of OoT, and one who gets handed a task as opposed to the kid in the original LoZ who for whatever reason clearly decided to go out and help the Princess himself. He's going to need a little moral support! And as a major arachnaphobe, I reeeally needed Navi to freeze time and explain how to kill Skulltulas those first few times. (Tektites in the early games, pssh, whatever, but the way that Skulltulas move in the later games freaks me the fuck out)

I'd be more worried about the spiders. *shudder*

Heh... I can't actually play LttP. It's like my brain doesn't co-operate when it's purely 2D - I couldn't play LoZ or LA, either. Spirit Tracks' interface works for me because you use the stylus so much, so you're not trying to do, like, D-pad combat or anything (I keep facing the wrong direction!). If they redid LttP with PH/ST's interface, I'd be very very happy!

XD Ghirahim's fanbase can be a very... mixed bag. And unfortunately, I don't - most of my fandom stuff is on Tumblr, and most of the people I'm interacting with, generally, are friends. I'm sort of on the edge of fandom.

Oh dude, he's incredibly sheltered. He barely knows anything outside the forest EXISTS, and suddenly he has to go save this huge world he doesn't even know? (And that's just the start of his trauma...) And he's nine. Most of the other Links are at least twelve or older, as best anyone can determine. (As far as we know - LoZ - 12, AoL - 16, OoT - 9/16, WW - 12, TP - 16, SS - 17.5, and I've headcanonned 14-15 for LttP/OoX/LA, 12-13-ish for the other toon games, MC/FS, FSA, and ST, and 10 for MM.) He's the youngest and the least experienced in basically... anything, so he NEEDS help. And sob, yeah, hate Skulltulas. Especially the ones in SS where they grab Link...

Heh, see, I'm a major old-school nerd- my very first Zelda game was The Adventure of Link, so clearly I was taught masochism at a very young age. I've finished all the old 2D games, and sincerely enjoyed them all (though Link's Awakening is best appreciated by fans of Mario as well as Zelda, I think) except... Link to the Past. It's the only one I've played so far where you're actually expected to kill other humans, and that just wigged me out. I mean, the guards of Hyrule don't know you're trying to save the Princess, they think they're doing the right thing! And your goddamn village sells you out to Ganon! And that's all in like the first half hour of gameplay! I tend to like Zelda games depending on how attached I feel to the Hyrule you're trying to save (among other factors) and by the end of LttP I was just like FUCK HYRULE, LET'S GO SOMEPLACE THAT ACTUALLY LIKES US, HUH, LINK? Also, my least favorite dungeon themes of all time.

I thought Link was stated to be 10 in the original LoZ in Hyrule Historia? My memory could be wrong, but he's definitely 16 in AoL.

Unfortunately, I haven't actually finished any of the 2D games - the first one I played/finished was OoT, and I've since played MM, WW (years ago, barely remember it, unfortunately), TP, ST, and now SS. But yeah, the little bit of LttP I played was kind of grim...

Huh... I was getting twelve from an Iwata Asks (which is also where 9/16 for OoT!Link comes from), but the only age I remember seeing in HH is 17.5 for SS.

...So many abbreviations.
