Kink lines?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-30 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
So someone straighten me out here: is a kink something that appeals to you only sexually?

For example, I get super psyched about cops and soldiers, but not like, "Man I wanna bang them," but more like, "Goddamn, that's what I want to do." I feel it as a need as physical as needing food or something.

I think usually when people say just "kink" they mean it as a sexual thing, yeah. But I've heard terms like "fictional kink" to describe elements in a story that make you enjoy it more (like for me I love unrequited love, stories set in the 1920s, guys wearing glasses, things like that), so....

That's more a fetish. They are usually used for sexual purposes, but are not inherently sexual.

Given that I'm not really interested in sexual things, I call those "intellectual kinks." They don't turn me on or whatever, because eww sexual stuff is not my cup of tea, but I love characters who display those traits, whether it's certain speech patterns or a penchant for wearing ties. So yeah, I distinguish between intellectual kinks and sexual kinks.

oh jeez i am the exact same way. i'm drawn to certain things like a rat on a cheeto, but never in a sexual sense beyond "wow that is really attractive"

I think I'm going to start using the phrase "like a rat on a cheeto," thanks.

I think I get this.

I have a thing for visually stunning images (static or otherwise), or well designed items. One time in art class I actually said a picture was "sexy" because I was so impressed by it, although it nothing about it was sexual in nature.

I use 'id candy' myself. It's not sexual, but I don't know that I'd exactly call it intellectual either.

Kink has a sexual connotation, yes.

Well, "kinks" are generally sexual, but occasionally people will use phrases like "narrative kinks" or "intellectual kinks" to describe non-sexual things that strongly appeal to them.

But as a kinky person, I don't think you have to be interested in the people doing the kink to have a sexual response to it. I have a kink for spanking, but when I read a spanking fic, I don't think, 'Wow, I'd love to be spanked by that character.' I just find it hot and like imagining the characters doing it.

But it sounds like your interest may not be a kink in the strictest sense. It's possible to be really into something without it being a kink.
