Actually. Jesus says you have to observe the old laws (he was a Jew, ffs) - Paul says you don't. And depending on your theological opinions, Paul (who never met Jesus, btw, and came many years afterwards), may or may not be full of shit.

Unfortunately Catholicism is based on Pauline doctrine, which is basically "let's ignore large chunks of what Jesus said and interpret elements of the Bible in wildly offensive ways" (original sin, women are the root of it for taking the apple, etc.)

So it all comes down to your views on Paul, basically. Though most Christians in North America like to spout old testament out of one side of their mouths and say it's meaningless out of the other (at their convenience, of course)

I'm sorry, what nonsense are you spouting? Catholicism's the one that says your actions and sins matter: Calvinism is the thing that says it doesn't matter whether you keep any of the commandments. Catholicism is the one that reads and uses the Gospels very heavily: various Protestant sects are the ones that say only the Epistles count for Christians, and that what Jesus said only counted for Jews (seriously, the noisy Chick-like tiny Protestant groups believe some very odd new things).

Given that Catholicism (like Orthodoxy) is based on the Tradition that produced the whole New Testament, claiming that their beliefs are derived from the Pauline epistles is just funny.

Wow. Your understanding of Christianity is pretty flawed. As in, I think you learned it from an anime board or something.
